Small Group of Swimmers Have "Fantastic" Meet

The Glasgow Kiwanis Swim Team (GKST) competed in Roundup, June 22 and 23. According to head coach Nicole Arnold, the team had a fantastic meet. "All 11 swimmers qualified in one or more of their individual events and got to compete on Sunday," she explained. "This was an impressive feat as the majority of the day Saturday it was pouring rain."

Arnold pointed out that despite the weather, the Glasgow swimmers were diligent and ready for their races.

Leading the team with top three finishes were: Raelee Dowden, Katie Kaiser, Allie Palm, Grace Reyes and Dalton Sand. With outstanding performances, Kaiser and Sand were each recognized as high point winners in their age groups. Both swimmers took home gold in all three of their events for the weekend. The achievement is the second consecutive for Kaiser and the third for Sand. Sand set a new personal record in the 50m butterfly, pushing one step closer to breaking the federation record in the event.

The GKST coaches recognized Dowden as the GKST Athlete of the Week for the Roundup swim meet. "Raelee had a standout meet on both Saturday and Sunday," said Arnold of the 15-year-old GKST veteran. "Saturday morning Raelee began her meet with a very competitive race in the 200m IM. She didn't achieve her best time but all strokes showed great technical skill for this early in the season. She also swam the 100m breast, 100m fly, and 50m fly (exhibition race), achieving personal records in all three."

Arnold went on to highlight Dowden's most notable performance of the weekend. "Raelee was competing against a fierce season competitor who had narrowly defeated Raelee in the 100m breaststroke just an hour before. However, when the 100m fly started, Raelee swam a gutsy race from start to finish and acquired a well-deserved personal best time by 3.64 seconds."

A pair of 12-year-olds also got a pat on the back from the coaches. "Allie and Abigail (Kulczyk) both found themselves in the championship heat of the 50m fly on Sunday and showed great stroke improvement from the previous day," said Arnold of the two.

She also gave a shout-out to both Carly Sawyer and Kaylly Turner. According to Arnold, both girls are in very competitive age groups, but were able to qualify for finals in one of their individual events. "They have been working really hard at practices to try and find what events they will be the most competitive at in future swim meets."

The swimmers will be competing in Plentywood on Saturday, June 29, and Sunday, June 30, where Arnold hopes to have more swimmers competing for Glasgow.
