Middle of Nowhere BBQ Cook-off Success

Ross Kastet poses at the "Middle of Nowhere" BBQ Cook Off at the Glasgow Elks this last Friday and Saturday. Kastet took home the honor of Reserve Grand Champion.

The inaugural "Middle of Nowhere" BBQ Cook-off took place in the Elks parking lot this past Friday and Saturday, Sept. 7 and 8. Twelve teams gathered to in an attempt to take home the Grand Champion prize. The high turn-out of locals at a first-year event can be credited to the superb organization skills of Zak Peterson, who took charge of bringing the new event to Glasgow.

Judging followed strict guidelines as Peterson hopes to achieve a sanctioned status, bringing more recognition and competition to this corner of the state. Judges enjoyed the tasting and judging even with the rules. Staff and volunteers were also enthusiastic about the event and are already looking forward to next year.

Beer Belly BBQ, Grant Aldinger, walked away from the event as Grand Champion, winning first place for chicken, fourth place in pork, and first for brisket. Team Kastet, Ross Kastet and Jeff Swanson, took home the Reserve Grand Champion honors, with a second place for ribs, third place for pork, and second for brisket. Bruce Damon Jr. and Cat White Eagle, of team Baby Got Back BBQ, took home third place, with Hawgnutz BBQ, Mike Merideth and Kyle Stein, and Stinky Water BBQ, Sam Waters and Brandon Larson, rounding out fourth and fifth place, respectively.
