Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913
District Tournament This Weekend
It was a senior night like no other! To start things off on Oct. 19, the C Squad and JV teams both won their matches against Class A Sidney. Then, a packed gymnasium honored the seven volleyball seniors and their families as favorite memories and future dreams were revealed. Hannah Mickelson belted out a beautiful rendition of the national anthem, and finally the whistle blew to start the game.
Sidney came out and jumped on top right away while Glasgow searched for some rhythm. Fortunately it didn't take long for good basics to take over and Glasgow maintained control of the match for games two and three. Game four saw a resurgence of Sidney strength but when it truly mattered, game five, GHS really poured it on and took the match 15-25, 25-21, 25-13, 14-25, 15-7.
For the Scotties, solid passing and manic levels of defense really kept the momentum going throughout the match, but a rash of overpasses by Sidney late in the game kept Hannah Mickelson busy at the net as she added several kills to her stat pack, finishing with 10 kills and five blocks overall. Three GHS players had double digit digs: Baylie Chappell 14, Kennedy Schmidt 12 and Ziggy Chamberlain 11. A very solid performance by Rachelle Glaser (20 assists) steered the offense, while Chappell and Glaser each contributed three aces on the evening.
This was definitely some of the best volleyball the team has played all year and fans were rewarded for their loyalty.
GHS traveled to Glendive Oct. 21 and didn't fare as favorably against the Dawson County Red Devils. In fact, none of the three teams won, although they all gave solid efforts. In the end, DCHS was just bigger than GHS and a lack of size caught up to the scrappy Scotties. A very nice trend continued for the Scotties at all three levels as blocking improved dramatically. Glasgow had 21 team blocks, with Hannah Mickelson chalking up nine of them and Keely Fossum, five. Jesi Kennedy ripped down eight kills while Baylie Chappell and Kennedy Schmidt each tallied six. Top defensive players were Madison Knodel (12 digs), Ziggy Chamberlain (10) and Cordelia Nickels (9). Rachelle Glaser rounded out the numbers with 24 assists.
Districts are next, Friday and Saturday, October 27-28, in Wolf Point so the Scotties will be preparing all week for what looks to be a challenging tournament.
