Law Enforcement:

Witkowski, Shot Fired, Theft

Jury selection for the Jay Witkowski murder trial has begun. 109 jurors have been summoned in the case. Witkowski is charged with the New Year’s Eve murder of Evelyn Garcia. Officials stressed that jury selection in the case will be overly crowded, and discretion should be used in deciding whether to attend the court proceedings over the next couple of days.

The Valley County Sheriff’s Office is reporting that they are investigating, in cooperation with Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, an incident involving an Opheim man, an airplane and a bullet hole.

On Aug. 10, Travis Nelson reported returning to Opheim from a flight to Culbertson and Glendive and discovered a bullet hole in the rear window of his airplane. Officials said the bullet entered on the pilot-side window and exited the passenger-side window in the backseat of the cockpit. The incident is under investigation.

The Sheriff’s Office is also reporting a boat motor theft near the Fort Peck area. The motor disappeared between Friday and Sunday last week. Anyone with information about the incident should contact the Sheriff’s Office at 406-228-4333.
