A Second-Place Finish Signals Progress for Reds

The Glasgow Reds put in a laudable performance at the Lewistown tournament this weekend with strong hitting and a final loss of 4-3 to the Dickinson Rough Riders for a second place finish.

Reds pitcher Keil Krumwiede hit 1-3 during the first game of the series, aiding the team to a 4-1 victory over Great Falls Electrics. Pitcher Kasey Seyfert allowed just two hits, one walk and no earned runs before closer Jason Thibault recorded the save.

The second game was a 7-6 victory over the Gallatin Valley Outlaws. Parker Kulczyk hit well for the Reds, going 1-1 and driving in one run and scoring one run himself, with a single in the third inning. Jason Thibault had the final three outs to record another save.

Game three saw an early Reds lead over Weyburn for a 13-3 victory on Friday. Samuel Schultz logged the win for the Reds, allowing three runs over five innings and striking out four hitters. Gage Legare doubled in the fifth inning, driving in Parker Kulczyk and Thibault, who were followed up by a single from Jake Kolstad, bringing home Krumwiede and Legare.

Blake Mattfeldt pitched for a win in game four, allowing four runs over seven innings. Mattfeldt struck out two, walked four and gave up six hits to help the Reds to a 8-4 victory over the Bitterroot Bucs.

Sunday’s final against Dickinson saw strong hitting from Krumwiede, who went 3-4 and drove in one. Krumwiede also took the loss from the mound, despite striking out seven.

Coach Jack Sprague has characterized the tournament as a time to gauge the team’s strengths and weaknesses. Contacted for comment, Sprague says, “We went in and played well against teams that we could very easily be up against in postseason play if we continue on. I think it signals good progress.”

Asked how the team’s play will affect their plans, Sprague is positive. “We do have some tinkering to do with individuals,” he says. “It’s just a matter of executing the plan and getting the results that we want. Overall, I’m happy.”
