Court Clerk Lynn Gilbert Named Judge

She'll Succeed Retiring Riggin On The Bench

Judges are not the most visible in the community, but their work does make an impact in the community. City Judge Dave Riggin is retiring at the end of this year, and at the last Glasgow City Council meeting the decision was made to fill his position with current City Court Clerk Lynn Gilbert.

Gilbert will take the new position on Jan. 1, 2014. She said that this is a unique opportunity that she looks forward to. Riggin gave her a strong recommendation for the seat, and Gilbert said she’ll miss her co-worker who has worked with her over the last two and a half years.

In order to fill the position, the successful candidate must have knowledge of the workings in the court, know the law and meet the qualifications. Gilbert says those requirements are to be of voting age, be a citizen of the state and city, and to have good character. The city court deals mostly with misdemeanor charges. Her term will be appointed for the next four years.

“I’m really looking forward to everything,” Gilbert said. “I enjoy the interaction with all the people that come in.”

Gilbert explained that she’s seen traffic violations to disorderly conducts come through the door. They also sometimes do preliminary hearings for felonies that end up being referred to district court. She said that some jury trials over misdemeanors also end up being referred to the district court when a decision can’t be agreed upon and to fulfill everyone’s right o appeal.

While Gilbert will remain in the same office, she said she’s still going to miss her position as the clerk. Luckily she will be available for the next incoming city court clerk for help as a resource. She is also excited to fulfill the next opportunity the city has given to her.

“I have some awfully big shoes to fill; he’s (Riggin) been a great inspiration and great support in my position,” Gilbert said.
