Gerald F. “Jerry” Myers, 83, died of natural causes on Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at the Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital in Glasgow, Mont.
He was born on Feb. 11, 1930, in Lancaster, Penn., the son of Elam W. and Thelma J. (Kimick) Myers.
He enlisted in the Army at the age of 17 and served in numerous places around the world. He graduated with a bachelor of arts in criminal justice from the University of Nebraska in Omaha and a masters of science in public administration from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. He served as the Superintendent of Her Majesty’s Prison in Pentridge, Melbourne, Australia. In 1989 he moved with his wife, Alpha, to St. Marie, Mont.
He married Alpha Mae Johnson on June 30, 1951, at Fort Lee, Va. They were married for 50 years and had nine children. Alpha passed away on April 5, 2002, in Glasgow.
He married Betty Jean Bailey on June 11, 2004, and they were married for nine golden years. Every Thursday Jerry wrote Betty a poem, expressing his love and admiration for her.
He lived and worked in Fort Lee, Va., Fontainebleau, France, El Paso, Texas, Saudi Arabia, Minneapolis, Minn., Baltimore, Md., Anchorage, Alaska, South East Asia, Provo, Utah, Melbourne, Australia, and Glasgow.
He received numerous decorations for his service in the U.S. Army. He served in the Aleutian Islands, France and South East Asia. He spent 14 years administering the prison system in Victoria, Australia.
He was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in numerous positions. He served as bishop, state president, Sunday school teacher, high councilman, and branch president. At the time of his death, he was patriarch of the Glendive stake.
He loved his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was active in business and civic life and enjoyed writing poetry. He was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and served in numerous positions in the VFW. He served as the commander of the Glasgow VFW Post twice.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alpha Mae Myers; and a step-son, Manson Harvey Bailey III.
Survivors include eight sons, Gerald F. Myers Jr. of Great Falls, James W. Myers of Glasgow, Jeffrey C. Myers of Highland, Utah, Joseph E. Myers and his wife, Felicita, of O Fallon, Ill., John R. Myers and his wife, Gail, of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, Joshua R. Myers and his wife, Jerlyn, of Worland, Wyo., Jason A. Myers of Glasgow, and Jed D. Myers and his wife, Beverly, of Lewistown; one daughter, Jennifer L. Chalmers, and her husband, Barry, of St. Marie; two brothers, Dick and Donny Myers; many cousins in the Lancaster, Penn., area; Betty’s three daughters, Mari Vawn Tinney and her husband, Bill, Tanna Jensen and her husband, Dell, and Kim Baldwin and her husband, Clayton; 39 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 5, at 10 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, followed by interment in the Highland Cemetery in Glasgow.
Bell Mortuary of Glasgow was in charge of arrangements.
