Rep. Steve Daines stopped in Glasgow early this morning on a swing through eastern Montana as part of his statewide natural resources tour.

Spillway rehab is Corps’ largest repair. The flood of 2011 caused damage to every dam on the Missouri and much of the Levee system in the lower reaches. The plunge pool at the bottom of the spillway is the largest single repair project on the Missouri River system. The force of the water that poured out of the lake and down the mile-long concrete chute, 55,000 cubic feet per second at the height of the flood, scoured a huge basin that now has unstable banks.

Woodland Farms, of Hinsdale, held its second Angus bull auction at the Glasgow Stockyards last Thursday. The top bull was Lot 23, Woodland Forward 23, which sold for $7,750 to ABS Global, the largest AI company in the world.

The Scottie girls dropped their softball season opener 6-5 to the Class A Blue Ponies in extra innings. “Overall, we took [the Havre game] as a practice. We used it to see somebody pitching at us, live pitching, we hadn’t had that yet,” said Head Coach Mark Falcon.

With cancelled meets across northern Montana, Glasgow track and field was forced to travel to 60-degree Columbus on March 28. “It was warm and sunny. A really great day for a track meet,” said Head Coach John LaBonty. Limited to only 23 athletes, due to practice minimums and competing against 24 other squads, the Scotties persevered through the weather to put on a few impressive early-season performances.

Some graphic illustrations were used at the Glasgow Middle School to hammer home the thought: using drugs and alcohol can hurt you. The ghost-out technique was used, where a detailed accident story was read over the school intercom, complete with the names of students. These students were pulled out of class and taken away to be given realistic makeup which they wore for the rest of the day.

A number of improvements for recreational sites at Fort Peck Lake were outlined at the Corps of Engineers’ annual spring meeting. Lake manager Roy Snyder also announced the completion of the breakwater at the Fort Peck Marina, calling it a major accomplishment which people have been working to achieve for 40 years.

Representing Lustre Grade School at the Spelling Bee in Nashua on Feb. 24 were Denise Pankratz, eighth grade; Ronda Olfert, eighth grade and Jessica Carlton, seventh grade. Also competing in the Academic Olympics for Lustre Grade School are Denise Pankratz, grade eight; Nikki Reddig, grade eight; Jessica Carlton, grade seven; Janeen Funk, grade seven; and Cade Reddig.

Troy Blunt, who led the Frazer Bearcubs to a third-place finish in the District 3C Divisional tournament heads the list of Montanan Class C players that were named to the All-Class State team. The 6 foot 2 senior was the only 3C team member to land on the first team.

Spring is here! The Glasgow High School track team does resistance training exercises. In these exercises, one athlete holds on to a rubber hose to provide resistance for their partner.

Fritz Hoppe, of Glasgow, was named 1973 champion livestock auctioneer for Montana at the ninth annual Montana Auctioneers association meeting in Lewistown.

Harold Anderson, formerly of Forsyth, has purchased the Gamble Store in Glasgow from Bob Palin. Following inventory earlier this week, the business is open as usual.

Southside Stalemate Hinges on Council Vote for Alfred Quiring or James Kruzich

Taking top honors in the senior division of the 4-H style revue Saturday are Kay Miller, of the Cherry Creek 4-H club and Danita Zinner of the Livewires 4-H club, second.

The Nashua Sleighers Snowmobile Club held its annual spring banquet at the Fort Peck Community Room with 92 members attending. Outstanding award went to the President Dennis Shanks. Best host award went to Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Reimche for the slough party. An award was presented to Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Nybakken who have been honorary members since the club was organized.

The Hawks emerged the winners of the Fort Peck school midget basketball tournament recently. The players include John Dahl, Daryl Keys, Brian Trotter, Doug Stein, Dennis Yager, Coach Jim Schoenfelder and Earl Dowell.

A new slate of officers for 1973 was elected at the annual meeting of the Glasgow Little League at the Johnnie Cafe. The officers are Ingvald Vegge, assistant senior league vice president; Bon Elfring, player agent; Al Simonsen, secretary; Swede Ehland, equipment agent; Warren Karst, treasurer; John Fargo, vice president and Tom Grewe, president.

Costs of the improved lighting system to be installed in Glasgow will range from a low of 83 cents a year per lot in some residential sections to $7.97 a year per lot in some downtown districts, it was reported this week by R.C. Fargo, city engineer. Mr. Fargo is now preparing exact figures on such costs in preparation for the creation of special improvement districts for the lighting.

A committee report recommending that the city float a bond issue for general street improvements and that parking meter be installed to pay for maintenance of such improvements was adopted at a general meeting of Glasgow merchants Monday called by the Chamber of Commerce mercantile committee. About 20 business and professional men and merchants were present at the meeting.

Hoer Gorder was elected commander of the Fort Peck post of the Veterans of Foregin Wars at a meeting in Veterans’ hall here Thursday night. He will succeed William D. Fly of Fort Peck when he and other officers are installed at a meeting, April 8.

Garth Maag, of Glasgow High School, is among 50 Montana outstanding high school athletes selected to compete in the second East-West charity game sponsored by the Montana Shrine. Magg, who last fall played his last season as end for the Scotties, was selected among the seniors who will compete representing the eastern Montana team at the game in Great Falls.

E.F. Simmons, of Hinsdale, has received the 100,000th driver’s license in Montana as announced by Charles L. Sheridan, state highway patrol chief.

Lieut. Col. Bryon A. Armstrong, of Glasgow, national guard officer, has completed a two-week indoctrination course at the ground general school in Fort Riley, Kansas. Colonel Armstrong, who is a battalion commander in the Montana combat team, is a World War II veteran.
