Lustre Girls 0-2 At Eastern C Divisional

The Lustre Christian girls basketball team saw their season come to an end at the Eastern C Divisional tournament in Wolf Point this past weekend. The Lions fell 49-23 to the Culbertson Cowgirls in the opening round of play March 1. They fell 50-33 to the MonDak Thunder in loser-out action Thursday.

Lustre held even with Culbertson early in the first quarter last Wednesday, but the Cowgirls slowly built up their lead to 15-8 by the end of the first eight minutes. Culbertson added 15 to the scoreboard in the second while holding Lustre to 5 points. The Cowgirls led 41-17 after three and outpaced the Lions 8-6 in the final quarter.

The Lions had only three players put points on the board. Alexa Reddig led the team with 12, hitting one three-pointer and 7-of-10 free throws. Grace Brown added 6 from the floor and Aubri Holzrichter scored 5 with a trey and a field goal. Lustre shot 58.3 percent from the line.

Both teams were called for 14 fouls in the game. Holzrichter drew four whistles while Reddig and Hope Marottek both had three fouls. Brown had two calls against here while Jaden Gibson and Abby Olfert had one a piece.

Lustre had 16 rebounds, two assists, six steals and 15 turnovers in the loss. Reddig grabbed 10 boards followed by Lauryn Holzrichter with three, Brown two and Gibson one. A. Holzrichter had both the team's assists. Reddig and A. Holzrichter each had two steals with Hannah Brown and G. Brown adding a takeaway a piece.

The Lions moved to loser-out action against MonDak on Thursday. The Lions were unable to find their rhythm in their second and final game of the tournament despite getting points from five players.

The Thunder led 8-5 after one and outscored the Lions 13-11 in the second quarter. MonDak increased their lead to 10 points after three quarters with a 16-point showing while the Lions found themselves outpaced 13-6 in the final eight minutes.

A. Holzrichter led the Lions with 12 points, hitting three from downtown and a free throw. Reddig added 9 with a three-pointer and a 2-for-2 showing at the stripe. G. Brown scored 7 with five bonus shots and L. Holzrichter hit a trey. H. Brown added a field goal. The Lions shot 53.3 percent at the line.

Lustre was called for 19 fouls while MonDak had 18 infractions. Reddig and H. Brown fouled out of the game while A. Holzrichter and G. Brown drew four whistles each. Marottek had one foul.

The Lions had 24 rebounds, two assists, five setals and 15 turnovers. G. Brown led in boards with eight followed by A. Holzrichter and H. Brown, both with five. Reddig grabbed three, Meredith Valentine two and Marotteck one. A. Holzrichter led in steals with two while Abby Olfert, Reddig and H. Brown had one takeaway a piece.

The Lions lose only senior Marottek, a first-year player who earned more court time as the season progressed, but will add a number of athletic current-seventh-graders to the roster. With work on getting expanding their scoring threats and more movement from players without the ball on offense, the Lions can hope to extend their postseason run next year.
