Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913

Steven Lowell Mayfield

Steven Lowell Mayfield, age 68, sadly left us Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2023, at his sister's home in Los Angeles, Calif., surrounded by the love of his family after a long battle with cancer.

Plans for a service are pending.

He was born Dec. 20, 1954, at Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital, in Glasgow, Mont., to Peggy and Lowell "Stretch" Mayfield, their first child and only son. He graduated high school in Delmar, N.Y., in 1973 and went on to play college basketball on scholarship for the University of Massachusetts Minute Men.

During his time at U Mass his family enjoyed watching him play many exciting games in "The Cage" at U Mass and at Madison Square Garden during the National Invitational Tournament. The basketball finals in NYC were always right after Thanksgiving. His family remembers bringing his favorite holiday dish, fruit salad, along with other holiday fixings in a cooler to the hotel where the team was staying.

After graduation from U Mass he went into banking which took him and his family to many interesting cities in Texas, Florida and North Carolina. He especially enjoyed Florida where he could visit Disney World with his children, Emily and Alex, as much as they wished.

He more recently worked for Helena Chemical and was a proud supporter and coach to basketball players in Hinsdale and Glasgow. Just like the Coach in" Ted Lasso," one of his favorite shows, he did not care about winning or losing, he just wanted the players to be the best version of themselves.

He leaves behind his daughter Emily and son Alex (Dulce) and sisters Patty Arons, Julie Smith, Kelly Passante, Holly Mullaney and Margaret Mayfield. In addition he leaves behind his best friend of the past 50 years, Peter Toohey. Peter has been like another brother to the family and his sisters are grateful for his support during Steve's long illness. His mother Peggy and father Stretch preceded him in death.
