Lustre Girls Place Third in District Advance to Divisional Tourney

Lustre Christian's girls basketball team, who went out in two games in last year's District tournament, extended their 2022-23 season with three wins and a third-place finish at this year's first postseason event. The Lions will attend the Eastern Divisional Tournament in Wolf Point in two weeks.

Lustre won their opening round game against the Frazer Bearcubs 57-42 last Wednesday before falling 55-30 to the Scobey Spartans, who went on to second place, Thursday. The Lions battled back, both in the tournament and in the game, against the Dodson Coyotes Friday in loser-out action with a 53-45 overtime victory. Lustre earned third with a 47-20 win over Nashua in the Consolation game Saturday, powered by a second-half scoring surge.

The Lions took a 13-10 lead in the first quarter over Frazer and outscored the Bearcubs 17-14 in the second. A slow offensive third saw the Lions put up 6 and the Bearcubs 2 for a 36-26 lead for Lustre heading into the fourth. The Lions lit up the nets with 21 points while holding the Bearcubs to 16 in the final eight minutes.

Aubri Holzrichter powered the Lions with 19 points, hitting two three-pointers and 5-of-8 free throws. Grace Brown connected on 7-of-11 bonus shots on her way to 17 points and Alexa Reddig added 15 with a 7-of-10 showing at the charity stripe. Hope Marottek hit three free throws, Lauryn Holzrichter hit a bucket and Jaden Gibson nailed her single free throw. The Lions shot 28.6 percent from the field and 63.9 percent at the line.

The Bearcubs were called for 28 fouls while Lustre held theirs to 16 calls. Hannah Brown fouled and Grace Brown drew four calls. Abby Olfert, Reddig and Holzrichter had two infractions each with Marottek drawing one whistle.

The Lions pulled down 44 rebounds to the Bearcubs' 42 boards. A. Holzrichter led the team with nine followed by G. Brown with eight. Reddig snagged six, L. Holzrichter and H. Brown three each, Marttok two and Gibson one rebound.

A. Holzrichter had three of the team's five assists with H. Brown and G. Brown adding a helper each. The Lions had 19 turnovers and 13 steals to the Bearcubs' 22 and nine. Reddig had five steals followed by G. Brown with three and Olfert with two. L. Holzrichter, A. Holzrichter and H. Brown had one takeaway a piece.

The win pitted the Lions against the Scobey Spartans on Thursday, where they fell 55-30. The Spartans led 12-6 after one and 29-13 at the half. The Lions were outscored 14-7 in the third and 12-10 in the fourth.

Reddig led the Lions with 15 points, draining 3-of-5 free throws. A. Holzrichter scored 11 with a three-pointer and a 2-for-3 showing at the line. L. Holzrichter and G. Brown scored 2 points each. The Lions shot 27.8 percent from the field and 50 percent at the line.

The Spartans were called for 18 fouls while Lustre held theirs to 13 calls. A. Holzrichter had four fouls while G. Brown and H. Brown each had three. Reddig had two fouls and Olfert drew one whistle.

Scobey had 34 rebounds to Lustre's 29 boards. G. Brown led the team with six followed by Reddig with four; L. Holzrichter, Olfert and H. Brown, three each; Gibson, two and Marottek, one. Seven rebounds went unattributed.

The Lions had 20 turnovers, four assists and seven steals compared with Scobey's 17 turnovers, eight assists and 13 steals. Reddig had two assists with A. Holzrichter and G. Brown notching one a piece. A. Holzrichter and H. Brown both had two steals while L. Holzrichter, Reddig and G. Brown had one takeaway each.

The loss moved Lustre Christian into loser-out action on Friday where they took on the Dodson Coyotes. The Lions led 7-5 at the end of one but foul trouble had Lustre sitting starters for stints in the first half. Dodson threw up 20 points in the second while the Lions scored 13, giving the Coyotes a 25-20 lead at the half. Lustre was outpaced 7-5 in the third but the Lions roared back in the fourth with 16 points. Two of those came courtesy of Reddig, who hit two free throws with 1.9 seconds remaining to tie the game at 41-41 and force extra time.

Reddig joined H. Brown, who went out in the fourth, with five fouls but the Lions as a team hit 80 percent from the field and 4-of-7 free throws in the extra four minutes while the Coyotes hit 33.3 from the field and 0-of-3 bonus shots. Lustre outscored Dodson 12-4 in the last four minutes for the win.

Reddig led the Lions with 26 points, draining five treys and 3-of-4 bonus shots. A. Holzrichter scored 12 with a three-pointer and a free throw. G. Brown added 7 and L. Holzrichter 3, both with a free throw. H. Brown hit a free throw. The Lions shot 27.3 percent from the field and 55.6 percent from the charity stripe.

Lustre had 18 fouls while Dodson was called for 17 infractions. H. Brown and Reddig fouled out. G. Brown drew four whistles while Olfert and A. Holzrichter had two a piece.

Lustre snagged 55 rebounds while Dodson had 44 boards. G. Brown led the team with 10, followed by A. Holzrichter, eight; L. Holzrichter, seven; Reddig, five; Olfert, four, H. Brown, three and Marottek, two. Sixteen rebounds went unattributed.

Dodson had 14 turnovers with four assists and five steals while Lustre had 16 giveaways, five assists and six steals. Reddig and A. Holzrichter had two assists each and L. Holzrichter had one helper. Reddig had four takeaways with L. Holzrichter and H. Brown getting one steal a piece.

The win advanced the Lions to the Consolation game Saturday where the faced the Nashua Porcupines. The teams split their regular season meetings, each winning their home game.

They played tight in the first eight minutes, reflected by the 8-8 score at the end of the first. Lustre edged Nashua by a single point in the second to carry a 16-15 lead into the second half. The remaining 16 minutes of play belonged to the Lions. Lustre went on a 21-2 scoring run in the third and outpaced Nashua 10-3 in the fourth.

The Porcupines' double team on Reddig did little to stop her. She led all scorers with 21 points, hitting two from the perimeter and 5-of-9 free throws. A. Holzrichter added 13 with a trey and a 4-for-4 showing at the line. G. Brown scored 6 and H. Brown hit a shot from downtown. Olfert and L. Holzrichter scored a bucket each. Lustre shot 35.4 percent from the field and 56.3 percent at the charity stripe.

Nashua was called for 17 fouls while Lustre held theirs to eight in the game. A. Holzrichter and G. Brown were each called for two. H. Brown drew only one whistle while guarding Nashua's Tia Dees, drastically cleaning up her game. Reddig, L. Holzrichter and Marottek each had a single foul.

Lustre outrebounded Nashua, grabbing 38 boards to the Porcupines' 31. A. Holzrichter led with eight followed by H. Brown with six, G. Brown with four, Reddig and L. Holzrichter three each, and Marottek one board. Thirteen rebounds were unattributed.

The Lions had 15 turnovers, 10 assists and six steals while Nashua had 23 turnovers, five assists and six steals. A. Holzrichter had five helpers and Reddig two. L. Holzrichter and G. Brown were credited with one each with one assist going unattributed. L. Holzrichter led in steals with two while Olfert, Reddig, H. Brown and G. Brown had one takeaway each.

Lustre faces Culbertson in the opening round of the Eastern C Divisional Tournament. The Lions and the Cowgirls tip off at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 1. The tournament, both girls and boys, runs Wednesday through Saturday, March 1-4, at Wolf Point High School.
