NC Girls Roll To Perfect Season

North Country’s girls basketball team closed out the regular season with two conference wins, rolling to a 10-0, 18-0 overall record. The Mavericks down the Lions 55-10 Friday night in Lustre and bested the Bearcubs 89-17 in Saco the following night.

The Mavericks poured in 22 points in the first quarter in Lustre while shutting out the home team. North Country led 30-3 at the half and 42-5 after three. The Mavericks outscored the Lions 13-5 in the final eight minutes of play.

The Mavericks turned in a balanced score sheet with every player on the roster scoring. Mattea McColly led the team with 11 points, hitting 3-of-4 free throws, with three rebounds and three steals.Paige Wasson went 3-for-3 on bonus shots and scored 9 with six rebounds, four assists and four steals. Teagan Erickson added 6 points, three rebounds, two assists, two steals and three blocks. Kendall Scheffelmear also hit for 6 points with six rebounds.

Sammie Wisher, Shelbi LaBrie and Kora Labrie added 4 points each. Berkley Hillman aded 3 with a free throw. Cienna Strommen, Jessa Erikcson, Josie Brown and BaiLee McColly scored 2 points a piece. The Mavericks shot 53.8 percent from the line.

Lustre Christian had nine fouls, three in the second half, while North Country had 10, two after the break. K. LaBrie, M. McColly and B. McColly were each called for two. Wisher, S. LaBrie, T. Erickson and Wasson drew one whistle a piece.

North Country took a 35-3 lead after one quarter against Frazer the following night. The Mavericks outscored the Bearcubs 26-11 in the second and shut the visitors out in the third while putting up 17 points. North Country held Frazer to 3 in the final eight minutes while adding another 11 to the home side of the scoreboard.

Wasson and T. Erickson both scored 23 points for the Mavericks. Wasson also had five rebounds, three assists and six steals while T. Erickson notched seven boards, seven assists and four steals. S. LaBrie also hit for 10 with three rebounds and M. McColly scored 8 with three rebounds.

Strommen, K. LaBrie and Charlie McColly each scored 6 points. J. Erickson hit three bonus shots while Wisher and Kennedy Simonson scored 2 each. The Mavericks shot 57.1 percent at the line.

Frazer had nine fouls, four in the second half, while North Country held theirs to four, three after intermission. K. LaBrie, M. McColly, J. Erickson and Josie Brown had one foul each.

“The Lady Mavericks finished out the season undefeated with an 18-0 overall record. The girls have stayed focused all season long and come to practice every week determined to push each other and continue to work hard and improve. I feel they are really starting to move the ball well and recognizing what and when it’s a good shot to take,” said head coach Amber Erickson. “It’s tournament week and we are excited to begin the post season!”

The Mavericks start the District 3-C Tournament with a first-round bye and will face the winner of the Nashua-Dodson game at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, in Scottie Gymnasium in Glasgow.
