NC Girls Defeat Nashua

The Mavericks girls basketball team coasted to another conference win this past week, taking a 61-21 victory off the Porcupines in Nashua Friday night. North Country holds on to the top spot in District 3C with a 7-0, 14-0 overall record.

The Mavericks established dominance early in the game, taking an 18-2 lead in the first quarter and outscoring the Porcupines 17-4 in the second quarter. North Country led 47-13 after three and outscored Nashua 14-8 in the final eight minutes of play.

Paige Wasson led all scorers with 18 points with two three-pointers and 2-of-2 shooting at the free throw line. Teagan Erickson put up 12 points with a shot from downtown and a 1-for-4 showing at the line. Kora LaBrie also hit 2-of-2 free throws and drained a trey on her way to 11 points. Mattea McColly added 7 points with a 3-for-5 free throw performance. Kendall Scheffelmear scored 6 with 2-of-5 free throws and Shelbi LaBrie hit 3-of-4 bonus shots in scoring 5 points. Sammie Wisher added a bucket. The Mavericks shot 59 percent at the free throw line.

North Country held their fouls to 11, six in the second half, while Nashua was called for 19, 11 after the break. K. LaBrie had three while McColly, Erickson and Josie Brown had two fouls each. Wisher and Berkley Hillman drew a whistle a piece.

The Mavericks travel to Glasgow Thursday, Feb. 2, for games against the Scotties and for the Teddy Bear Toss, which will take place between the varsity games. Fans are encouraged to bring new and gently used stuffed animals for the toss, all of which will be donated to FMDH, Phillips Co. Hospital and St. Vincent’s Hospital in Billings for children having overnight stays.

The JV Mavericks and Scotties will play a half-game at 3:30 p.m. and the girls JV team will tip off at 4:30 p.m. The boys varsity game is scheduled for 6 p.m. followed by the girls varsity game at 7:30 p.m.

North Country hosts Scobey in Whitewater Friday, Feb. 3, with the girls varsity teams tipping off at 6 p.m. and the boys varsity teams hitting the hardwood at 7:30 p.m.
