Nashua Girls Lose One, Win One

Nashua’s girls basketball team split their conference games last week. The Porcupines lost 61-21 to the number-one ranked North Country Mavericks Friday at home but rebounded with a tight 32-29 victory over the Coyotes in Dodson the following evening. Nashua’s record sits at 3-5, 6-8 overall.

The Porcupines struggled to find an offense against North Country, trailing 18-2 at the end of one and 35-6 at the half. Nashua put up 7 in the third and 8 in the fourth, but the Mavericks scored 12 and 14 in the same frames.

Tia Dees scored 10 points, all from the field after going 0-for-7 on free throws. Guinevere Abern put up 6 points with 2-of-2 shooting at the line and Kaitlyn Miller hit 1-of-2 free throws on her way to 5 points. Nashua shot 27 percent from the free throw line.

North Country held their fouls to 11, six in the second half, while Nashua racked up 19, 11 after halftime. Gracyn Sibley and Miller fouled out of the game while Dees was called for four fouls. Alexis Murdock had two calls against her and Katey Dykstra, Abern and Madison Harris drew a whistle each.

Nashua had to overcome a 16-8 first quarter deficit in their win over Dodson the following night but did so after outscoring their hosts in each of the remaining three quarters. The Porcupines put up 7 in the second and held the Coyotes to 5 points. After halftime, Nashua came out with 10 in the third and held Dodson to a single bucket for a 25-23 lead heading into the final quarter. The Porcupines edged the Coyotes by a single point in the third, 7-6, to earn the win.

Dees again led in scoring with 21 points, hitting 5-of-11 free throws. Harris scored 4 and Abern 3 with a free throw. Murdock and Miller added a bucket each. Nashua shot 40 percent at the line.

The Porcupines held their fouls to nine in this game, four in the second half, while Dodson was called for 17, nine after the break. Miller and Dees each drew three whistles while Sibley had two fouls and Harris one.

Nashua travels to Frazer Friday, Feb. 3, to take on the Bearcubs with a 5:30 p.m. varsity girls game and a 7 p.m. boys varsity game. The Porcupines will be in Brockton Saturday, Feb. 4, for a 4 p.m. varsity girls game and a 5:30 p.m. varsity boys game against the Warriors.
