Glasgow Speech And Drama Compete At State

The Glasgow High School Speech and Drama team sent six of their seven competitors to the Eastern B/C State meet in Manhattan Jan. 27 through 28. On the way there, the Scottie Cruiser also picked up the Malta Speech and Drama team.

The first day saw the six members, Chase Tarum, Gabe Proctor, Connor Whitmar, Caith "Vick" Overbey, Kai Combs and Mason Swenson complete three rounds of competition. After eating out as a team and having some fun, they were back at it again on Jan. 28, with the fourth round of competition, semi-finals and finals. Tarum, Proctor and Swenson all went on to the final round.

When the competition was finished, Tarum took sixth in humorous oral interpretation, Proctor took fifth in humorous oral interpretation, Whitmar took 12th in spontaneous oral interpretation, Overbey took 18th in dramatic solo, Combs took 11th in dramatic oral interpretation and Swenson took 7th in memorized public address.

After the State meet, the team and individuals were recognized by the National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA). Seniors Swenson is number 28 with 884 points and Tarum is number 30 with 882 points. Student rankings are based on points earned by participating in a number of speech and debate activities including interscholastic competition, public speaking and service activities. These two students are in the top 100 for Montana students.

Glasgow School is also ranked in the top 42 schools as number 23. School rankings are based on strength, which is determined by the number of active student degrees in the Honor Society, plus the top three active coach degrees for the team.

This year's Glasgow Speech and Drama team was led by co-head coaches Carla Swenson and Katerina Heiser along with volunteer coach Tasheena Wilcox.
