There was overwhelming support for the Glasgow Downtown Association's fourth annual Polar Putt Putt on Jan. 21, from players and local businesses. A total of 18 businesses from throughout Glasgow participated, including Elks Lodge, Shippwrecked, Elle Boutique, Montana Bar, Mattfeldt Electric, Wheatgrass Arts and Gallery, Glasgow Combat Sports, Blend 10, Busted Knuckle Brewery, United Insurance & Realty, Robyn's Nest, Glasgow City-County Library, D&G Sports & Western, Nemont, Revive Beauty Bar, Sugg Clinic, Siding 45 Skatepark and Red Barn Gifts. Toodie's Cafe was also open for pre-game fuel as well as hosted a driving range to get the arms, legs and putter loosened for the actual event. In addition to being open on a Saturday for regular sales, the participating businesses donated prizes and set up mini-courses throughout their building for teams to play.
This year saw a total of 25 two-person teams came out. They had plenty of time to play the 18 holes that were set up. Mulligans were also available for purchase during registration to provide the opportunity to replay a hole if the ball didn't cooperate.
As the day progressed, golfers had a fun time, even if the ball didn't go the way through the course as intended and hoped. In addition to having their own hole, The Busted Knuckle was host for the awards ceremony, which was the perfect venue for players to unwind. With a $30 entry fee per two person team, 70 percent was given back as cash prizes to the first, second and third place winners. First place was awarded to Ricci and Carla Olson, who won $272. Second place was awarded to Kevin and Latosha Taylor who won $136, and donated their winnings back to the Glasgow Downtown Association minus their entry fee. Third place was a tie between Mary Morehouse and Sally Stein and Tyler Fox and Tara Strommen. Each team split the $70 prize, with Fox and Strommen donating their $35 winnings back to the Glasgow Downtown Association.
Teams were also awarded on their best costume, worst score and hole in one with raffle prizes donated by the participating businesses, including gift cards, a Yeti tumbler, t-shirts, books, skin products and straight up cash.
Best Costume, which was voted on by some of the Glasgow Downtown Association members, was awarded to Tiffany Taft and Marlo Fewer. Worst Score was awarded to Kim Hunter and Tana Tweten. As a result of the many hole-in-ones, team names were placed into a bucket of those who qualified with McKenzie Bengochea winning the game of chance.
Players also had the opportunity to choose the best hole and the prize went overwhelmingly to Siding 45 Skatepark with their mini ramp course.
"Special shout out to the Knuckle and especially Dylan [Hughes] for creating a spreadsheet to calculate the totals and find the winners. It was a major help as we had totally underestimated the talent it takes to count them up!," said co-chair of the Glasgow Downtown Association Madelyn House. "Also thanks to the Elks for letting us use the entryway for registration and Toodies for the practice course!'
Up next for the Glasgow Downtown Assocation is planning for the summer. Alive At Five events will will start in June and go through September. These events are always the third Wednesday of the month, featuring live music, food and the chance to enjoy the summer weather.
