NC Girls Improve to 9-0 Overall

North Country's girls basketball team continued their win streak with victories over Glasgow, 59-12, and Scobey, 61-43, this past week. The Mavericks downed the Class B Scotties in Saco Thursday before adding a conference win against the Spartans on the road Saturday.

"The girls came out and looked sharp, especially it being the first two games after the Christmas break. We were able to spend some time breaking stuff down especially on the offensive and I thought the girls did a good job transitioning those skills into the games this weekend," said head coach Amber Erickson.

The Mavericks wasted no time in taking control of the game Thursday, running up a 20-0 lead in the first quarter over the Scotties. North Country gave up 3 points to Glasgow in the second while adding 10 to their side of the scoreboard. The Mavericks did not let up after the break, pouring in 25 while holding the Scotties to 5 points. Both teams scored 4 in the final eight minutes.

As a team the Mavericks shot 60 percent from the floor. They had 11 turnovers and 18 assists.

Teagan Erickson led the Mavericks with 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Paige Wasson added 14 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals. Shelbi LaBrie put up 10 points with two assists and three steals. Kora LaBrie hit for 7 points with two assists and two steals.

Kendall Scheffelmear added 4 points and Josie Brown 3 while Mattea McColly and Jessa Erickson hit a bucket each.

North Country's JV team won their game against the Scotties 21-19.

J. Erickson led the team with 7 points followed by Berkley Hillman with 6. Charlee McColly scored 4 and Layna Jones added a trey. Bailee McColly hit a free throw for the Mavericks.

Saturday, North Country beat Scobey 61-43 on the road. The Mavericks shot 47 percent from the floor. They had 11 turnovers, 14 assists and 19 steals.

Wasson led the way with 19 points, three rebounds and 10 steals. T. Erickson added 18 points, seven rebounds and two assists. K. Labrie scored 8 with four assists and S. LaBrie added five assists and 7 points.

"This week we were excited to start the new year with Glasgow and Scobey. Both teams are great programs and we knew we would have to do little things right in order to get wins against them," Coach Erickson said. "Scobey jumped out to a good lead on us in the first quarter but my girls weathered the storm and came back in the second quarter and put together a solid second half as well to get the conference win."

The Mavericks host the Lustre Christian Lions in Saco Friday, Jan. 13. Girls JV will play at 4 followed by the boys JV at 5 p.m., both half games. Varsity girls tip off at 6 p.m. followed by the boys varsity game at 7:30 p.m. North Country travels to Frazer Saturday, Jan. 14, to take on the Bearcubs for a girls varsity game at 6 p.m. and a boys varsity game at 7:30 p.m.
