Charles Edward Johnston

Charles Edward Johnston passed away peacefully at his son's home in Covington, Wash., on Thursday, Dec. 28, 2022. He was surrounded by his children.

Charles was known as Chuck and Chucky to his childhood friends in Fort Peck and Nashua, Mont., C.E. to his airline coworkers, and Charlie to his patrons at Charlie's Tavern. He was born in Nashua on Feb. 4, 1941, to Mary K. (Ihnat) Johnston and Charles Joseph Johnston. He will be welcomed to heaven by James' and Rachel's mother, Carol Ann Nelson, parents Charles and Mary, siblings Claudia Trotter and James Johnston, son Charles Richard Johnston, and brother-in-law Joseph Holton.

He is survived by his many family members: siblings, Cathy Holton, Mike Johnston, Andrea (Johnston) Dobbs, Dwayne Dobbs, and Barry Johnston, children Debbie Hodgkin, Jackie Johnston, James Johnston, daughter-in-law Jessica Johnston, Rachel Johnston, son-in-law Andy Shepard, grandchildren Kayla Gordon, Marina Hodgkin, Alec Johnston, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Charles had a happy childhood surrounded by his six siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

In 1959, he left Fort Peck to attend Gonzaga University. While there, he met and married JoAnn Coupal, and they had three children: Deborah, Charles, and Jackie. In 1964, Charles graduated from Gonzaga University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration. The family moved to Federal Way, Wash., and Charles began his career as a passenger agent for United Airlines. During his career at United, Charles enjoyed traveling the world during his vacation time.

In 1977, Charles married Lynn Ferguson. They enjoyed building their beautiful home, traveling, and going to the Husky and Seahawk games. During this time, Charles became the owner and operator of Charlie's Tavern in Seattle, Wash. In the late 80s he met Carol Ann Nelson, and they welcomed two children: James and Rachel.

Charles was a wonderful father and grandfather. He would do anything for his family, and they were his true joy in life. You will be missed Dad, Daddio, Pops, Papa and Old Man. We'll love you forever.

The family will gather this summer at the Nashua Cemetery to celebrate his life. Rest in peace Father.
