GHS Speech And Drama Team Hit The Road

The Glasgow High School Speech and Drama team have been traveling throughout the state over the past month, bringing home individual placings as well as speech sweeps as a team. The team started their season on Oct. 29, with the Glasgow Invitational and every week since each student involved has been practicing, competing and feeling more and more confident in their performances.

The team traveled to compete in the Miles City Invitational on Nov. 12, where seven kids participated. Sophomore Gabe Proctor took first place in Humorous Oral Interpretation (HOI) while senior Chase Tarum took second place. Sophomore Connor Whitmer took third place in spontaneous oral interpretation (SPOI) and senior Mason Swenson took home second place in memorized public address (MPA). Samantha Combs took fourth place in dramatic solo and freshmen Mirax Lipscomb and Caith Overbey took second place in humorous theater. The team also brought home the Class B Speech Champion certificate. "We had a good meet in CJI today!," exclaimed co-head coach Carla Swenson. "Good job kids!" In addition to C. Swenson, the team is coached by co-head coach Katerina Heiser as well as volunteer coach Tasheena Wilcox.

The team hoped to repeat these successes for their next meet during the Circle Invitation at Circle High School on Nov. 19. Despite it being a long day, the kids still placed well, with once again taking sweeps for Speech, achieving first place. Proctor and Tarum switched standings, with Tarum taking first and Proctor taking second in HOI. Combs took home second place for DOI, while M. Swenson took fourth in MPA. Whitmer took second place in SPOI while Lipscomb and Overbey took 14th in humorous theatre. Harley Edwards, who competed in dramatic solo took home ninth. "Kids did awesome, despite it being a long day!," stated C. Swenson.

The team next traveled to Shepherd to compete in the biggest meet yet in the season as AA, A, B and C schools are competed during the Hays-Lodgepole Invitational on Dec. 3. Once again the speech team took sweeps, bringing home third place as a team. Proctor took second while Tarum took third in HOI. Lipscomb and Overbey took seventh. Swenson took eighth in MPA and Whitmer took SPOI in sixth. Though Combs did not place, coach C. Swenson stated she still did a great job and had an amazing attitude all day. "This was a huge meet with competition from all around the state," said C. Swenson.

The next meet, the kids were able to stay closer to home for the Malta Invitational on Dec. 10. Though it was a small meet compared to the previous one they attended, the kids gave it their all. Once again, the speech team took home Speech Sweeps for the team for first place. Edwards took second place in dramatic solo, while Combs took second place for DOI. Tarum and Proctor battled out for first place in HOI, with Proctor once again taking first place and Tarum achieving second place. Whitmer took second place for SPOI, and Overbey switched it up by performing impromptu, taking home fifth place. M. Swenson took home second place.

The kids competed at the Lewistown Invitational on Dec. 17, however results were not available as of pres time.

After the holiday break, the students will travel to Glendive on Jan. 7 for the Glendive Invitational, and then provide a Showcase and recognize the seniors on Thursday, Jan. 12, at 6 p.m.
