NC Girls Beat Defending State Champs

The North Country girls basketball team posted two wins at the Lewistown Showcase this past weekend. The Mavericks defeated Fort Benton 61-23 Friday and then beat the defending state champions, Winifred-Roy, 43-37 Saturday.

North Country had 17 steals, 16 offensive rebounds and 10 assists in their win over Fort Benton.

Paige Wasson had 18 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Kora LaBrie added 12 points and five steals. Teagan Erickson put up 11 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three blocks. Mattea McColly had 8 points and Shelbi LaBrie contributed 7 points and two assists.

The Mavericks put up 13 steals, nine assists and a 45 shot percentage from the floor in their win over the defending champs.

Wasson had 9 points, three rebounds and five steals while S. LaBrie had 8 points, four rebounds and two assists. K. LaBrie put up 8 points, three rebounds, three steals and three assists. Erickson had 7 points and seven rebounds while Kendall Scheffelmear hit for 6 points. McColly added another 5 points.

Coach Amber Erickson said, “I was proud of the team effort this weekend in our games. We have a lot of kids stepping up and doing great things. The Winifred-Roy game was a defensive battle and they are a very good team and it was fun to watch the girls buckle down, play tough and grind out a great win against the 2022 State Champions. This game gave us a good idea of the things we need to continue to work on to improve our game.”

The Mavericks host the Nashua Porcupines in Hinsdale Thursday, Dec. 15, with games at 6 and 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, they host the Dodson Coyotes in Whitewater with games also at 6 and 7:30 p.m. North Country travels to Circle Saturday, Dec. 17, for games at 4 and 5:30 p.m.
