Ice Dawgs Dam the Rapids

Glasgow Beats Salmon in First Two Games at Home

The High School Ice Dawgs returned to the rink for the first time this season at home with two games against the Salmon (Idaho) Rapids. The Dawgs dammed the Rapids in both games: 10-3 Friday night followed by a 10-0 shutout Saturday morning.

The first few minutes of the game Friday evening looked to belong to the visiting Rapids but momentum quickly shifted to the Ice Dawgs. Once they took control of the puck, the game belonged to the Dawgs.

Aiden Price kicked off the Dawgs' onslaught with an even-strength goal with 10:40 left on the clock in the first period. Trevor Dulaney doubled the lead at 6:33 with an assist from Charlie Cornwell on another even-strength goal. Sam Knierim, assist Tristan Powell, took the Dawgs' to a 3-0 lead with 3:18 remaining in the first. Glasgow held a 4-0 lead at the first buzzer after another even-strength goal by Josh Llewellyn, assist Mason Hunter, with 1:42 on the clock.

Dulaney notched his second goal of the game 4:20 into the second period on a Dawgs' man advantage with assists from Bode Barnett and Michael Hoyer. Barnett found the back of the net 2 minutes 19 seconds later with an assist from Hunter while a man short. Salmon got on the board with 2 minutes left until intermission.

Glasgow started the final period with a 6-1 lead and was far from done as Hoyer proved 18 seconds into play. The Rapids answered 34 seconds later to keep their deficit at five goals. Just under a minute later Tavin Boland padded the Dawgs lead with assists from Hunter and Dulaney.

Salmon found their way past a lonely Aidin Wilkowski in the Glasgow net with 3:42 remaining in the game. However, Boland sent the puck past the Rapids' netminder with 1:34 remaining and assisted on Dillon Hughes' goal with 49 ticks left to give the Dawgs' their 10-3 victory.

Glasgow outshot Salmon by a 52-19 margin. Wilkowski had an 84.2 save percentage and gave up no power play goals on the Rapids' seven attempts. The Dawgs went 50 percent on the man advantage, getting two PPGs in the game.

The Dawgs spent 37 minutes in the penalty box on nine infractions while Salmon served only 10 minutes on six penalties.

Hunter received a sentence of 2-and-10 in the first for head contact and head contact misconduct and Hughes served two minutes for tripping. Lex Fairclough, roughing; Powell, high-sticking, and Zevin Kummerfeldt, high-sticking, each served two minutes in the second period. Cornwell was called for head contact in the third and received a 5-and-10 with a game ejection and one-game suspension.

After a night to warm up and cool off, the teams hit the ice again Saturday at 10 a.m. Game two was all Glasgow as they outshot Salmon 41-14 in their shutout win.

Salmon put up seven of their shots in the first period while holding Glasgow to five, but both goalies denied all attempts on their homes.

Tatum Hansen started the scoring in the second period with help from Hoyer and Barnett at 14:02 and assisted on Hoyer's PPG a little over two minutes later. Hansen lit the lamp again with 2:27 remaining in the first. Barnett and Hoyer had the helpers.

The Dawgs turned up the heat in the final period with 19 shots while holding the Rapids to zero. Twenty-five seconds into the third, Hoyer hit a shortie with help from Barnett. Barnett notched his own short-handed goal 22 seconds later with an assist from Hansen.

The Hoyer-Barnett-Hansen line did not get all the scoring though. Boland got in on the action with 15:27 left to play with help from Hunter and Peyton Hubbard put the puck past the Salmon netminder at 11:40 with an assist from Boland. Kimber Dulaney, one of the players absorbed from last year's 19U team, scored unassisted with 4:10 remaining. Hubbard connected again, assist Hoyer, with 3:32 left to play and Hansen took the Dawgs' lead to 10-0 with help from Boland at 1:02.

Wilkowski earned the win after turning away 14 shots on his goal and denying the Rapids all nine of their power plays. At the other end of the ice, the Dawgs put 10 of 41 shots in net and went 2-for-5 on the man advantage.

Salmon served 10 minutes in the penalty box for their calls while Glasgow spent 28 minutes in the sin bin on their 10 infractions. Barnett, cross-checking, and Hunter, interference, served two minutes each in the first. Boland, interference; Powell, roughing; Knierim, checking from behind; Hunter, roughing; Dulaney, interference; Kummerfeldt, roughing, and Dulaney, holding, each served two minutes in the second while Knierim was sentenced to an additional 10 minutes for checking from behind.

The Dawgs will return to competition Friday through Sunday, Dec. 2-4, at a tournament in Sidney. Check hlyh.com for schedule information.
