Mavericks Advance to Eastern C Divisional's

The North Country Mavericks rode through the District 1C Volleyball Tournament this past weekend to claim second place and advance to the Eastern C Divisional tournament this coming weekend.

As the number two seed entering the first post-season event, the Mavericks were granted a bye in the first round. They faced the number seven Scobey Spartans in round two and defeated them in three sets, 25-17, 25-21, 25-14.

Kendall Scheffelmear led the team in aces with two, followed by Teagan Erickson and Cienna Strommen with one each. Erickson led in kills with 20 while Paige Wasson notched 13 and Scheffelmear 10. Wasson had 17 assists for North Country, followed by Kennedy Simonson with 11 and Berkley Hillman with 10. Kora LaBrie put 12 digs on the stats sheet with Wasson, Hillman, Scheffelmear and Strommen adding five each. Erickson had one block for the Mavericks.

North Country took another step towards the championship match with a win over the third-seed Savage Warriors, 25-13, 26-24, 16-25, 25-20. Erickson and LaBrie each had three aces in the win while Erickson also led in kills with 26 while Wasson added 18. Wasson led in assists with 27, followed by Simonson with 12 and Hillman with six. Erickson put 12 digs on the stats sheet with LaBrie and Wasson adding eight a piece and Hillman registering seven digs. BaiLee McColly stopped two Warriors shots. Wasson and Erickson each added a block for North Country.

The Mavericks moved into the undefeated semi-final round to face top-seeded Froid/Lake, the team that would hand North Country their only losses of the weekend. Froid/Lake won the match in three sets with tight scores, 23-25, 23-25, 18-25. Erickson and LaBrie put up three aces each while Erickson had 26 kills, followed by Wasson with 18. Wasson led in assists with 27 while Simonson added 12 and Hillman six. Hillman put up 10 digs followed by McColly and LaBrie with eight each. Erickson and Scheffelmear had two blocks a piece.

The loss moved the Mavericks to the back side of the bracket where they did battle with the Plentywood Wildcats for a shot at the trophy match. North Country came out on top of the consolation match in four sets, 25-27, 26-24, 27-25, 25-23. Wasson had five aces, McColly two, Strommen and LaBrie one each. Erickson led in kills with 20 followed by Wasson with 17, Scheffelmear 11 and Mattea McColly six. LaBrie notched 17 digs and Wasson added nine. B. McColly and Scheffelmear had three blocks a piece while Wasson and M. McColly added two each.

The win pitted the Mavericks in a rematch against Froid/Lake in the hopper. North Country fell in three sets, though not without putting up a fight. North Country kept the games close – 21-25, 22-25, 25-27 – but could not upset the number one seed.

Wasson led the team in aces with four, in kills with seven and in assists with 12. LaBrie had two aces while Scheffelmear and Simonson added one each. Erickson added six kills, followed by M. McColly, five; Scheffelmear, four, and B. McColly, three. Simonson registered eight assists and Hillman added three. LaBrie led in digs with nine. Wasson added eight and B. McColly seven while Simonson and Scheffelmear put up five each.

North Country advances to the Eastern C Volleyball tournament in Culbertson this Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 3-5. The Mavericks start the tournament Thursday, Nov. 3, against Jordan at 10 a.m.
