Water and Sewer Rates For Glasgow Customers Will Increase

During the Glasgow City Council meeting on Aug. 1, the Council gave final approval for an annual two percent increase in water and sewer rates for city customers through September 2027. The initial increase will see the base rate of residential water go up to $28.71 and the sewer base rate will increase to $45.75. The new rates will be effective Sept. 1, however residents won’t see the new rate reflected until they receive their October billing notices for September usage. The two percent increase cycle will go from October to September until 2027.

This decision has been a few months in the making. On June 6, the City Council adopted a Resolution of Intention to increase the rates for users of both the municipal water system and the municipal sewer system. The Resolutions stated the City found it necessary to collect sufficient revenues to pay the costs associated with the operation and maintenance of the water and sewer system.

A public comment period was held during the Council’s scheduled meeting on July 5, where no comment was provided by the public regarding the rate increases.

During the next scheduled City Council meeting on July 18, the Council approved the first reading of Ordinance No. 979 – adopting a new residential and commercial water charges as well as Ordinance No. 980 – adopting new residential and commercial sewer charges. At the Aug. 1 meeting, the Council then approved the second reading of both ordinances, allowing the rates to be go in effect.
