The Glasgow Reds traveled to Watford City, N.D., this past week for the annual Watford City Tournament. Glasgow won their first two games against Dickinson, N.D., 16-1, and Glendive, 17-9, before falling to Lovell, Wyo., 8-7. The loss sent them to the consolation game where they faced host team Watford City. The Reds took fourth after dropping the game 11-6.
In their first game on Thursday, Glasgow downed Dickinson, 16-1 in four innings after establishing a 5-0 lead after one inning.
Center field proved to be the place for the Reds' hits in the first, with all scoring coming from balls sent to the middle of the field.
Tatum Hansen crossed the plate first for the Reds followed by Juliun Benson, both sent home by a Rance Rhoads fly ball to center field. Rhoads and Jeramiah Benson scored on a JT Sprague line drive to center field. Sprague score on the next batter when Jordan Plummer hit a pop fly to center field.
Glasgow ended Dickinson's first at-bat in short order – sending their opponents back to the field after a three-up, three-down performance.
The Reds added two more runs in the top of the second, still finding success in hits to center field. Hansen scored again on a Jeramiah Benson ground ball to center field and Jack Kolstad was sent home by a Rhoads line drive to the same area.
Glasgow again allowed Dickinson only three batters in the bottom of the second, sending them back to the field with a strikeout, ground out and fly out.
The Reds turned up the offense in the third with eight runs. Walker Laumeyer, in as a courtesy runner for Plummer, scored first on a Hansen line drive to Glasgow's sweet spot in center field. Juliun Benson mixed things up with a fly ball to right field but still sent Jon Grimes and Hansen home with his double. Rhoads went back to center field with a ground ball, driving Kolstad home next.
Jueramiah Benson followed Juliun Benson's lead with a line drive to right field, sending the latter home with his double.
Three batters later Plummer drilled a line drive to left field to send Rhoads home. Grimes was walked next, advancing all the runners and sending Juliun Benson home. Hansen grounded into a double play but Laumeyer, in for Plummer, scored first to increase the Reds' lead to 15-0.
Glasgow shut Dickinson out again in the bottom of the third before adding another run to their score in the top of the fourth. Kolstad crossed home when Jeramiah Benson sent a line drive to center field.
Dickinson scored once in the the bottom of the fourth but could not muster enough offense to continue the game.
Sprague went the distance for the Reds on the mound, throwing 60 pitches over four innings. He allowed one run on two hits with five strikeouts and a 76.7 strike percentage.
Glasgow outhit Dickinson 15-2 in the game, led by Hansen, Rhoads and Plummer with three hits each. Juliun Benson and Jeramiah Benson had two hits a piece while Kolstad and Sprague each had one. Rhoads led the team with four RBIs followed by Juliun Benson with three. Jeramiah Benson, Sprague and Plummer had two each while Hansen and Grimes each sent one runner home. Hansen netted two stolen bases.
Friday Glasgow faced fellow Montana team, Glendive and downed the team 17-9 powered by strong offense in the second, fourth and fifth innings.
Glendive took a 1-0 lead after one and added another six runs in the top of the second before Glasgow found their bats.
The Reds lit up the scoreboard in the bottom of the second with nine runs, making their way through the line-up and then some. Laumeyer touched home first, scoring on a passed ball with Hansen at the plate. A couple pitches later Hansen hit a pop fly to right field to send Grimes home.
Rhoads stepped to the plate with the bases loaded for Glasgow. He let a ball go by, saw a strike and then homered on a a fly ball to center field for the grand slam. Hansen, Kolstad and Michael Hunter touched the plate in front of Rhoads.
Glasgow loaded up the bases again after Sprague singled and both Jeramiah Benson and Laumeyer were hit by pitches. Plummer sent Sprague and Jeramiah Benson home with a ground ball to left field. Laumeyer scored when Hansen was walked, advancing all the runners.
Glendive tied the game up in the third with two runs before shutting Glasgow out. The Reds returned the favor in the top of the fourth. They then claimed the lead with four Glasgow runs.
Hunter tripled on a fly ball to center field, driving Hansen and Juliun Benson home. Hunter scored on a Rhoads fly ball and Rhoads scored on Sprague fly ball to center field.
Glasgow kept Glendive off the scoreboard again in the top of the fifth with a three-up, three-down showing by Glendive, then repeated their four-run performance.
Toryn Richards scored on a Hunter ground ball to left field. Hansen scored on a passed ball with Rhoads at the plate before Rhoads sent Juliun Benson home with a ground ball to left field. Rhoads was driven home on the next batter when Sprague hit a ground ball to left field, giving Glasgow the 17-9 victory.
Juliun Benson was the starting pitcher for Glasgow, throwing 57 pitches over two innings. He allowed seven runs on five hits with four strikeouts and a 59.6 strike percentage. Hunter relieved him for two-thirds of an inning, throwing 29 pitches in his time on the mound. He allowed two runs on no hits with a 44.8 strike percentage.
Rhoads earned the win for the Reds, allowing no runs or hits in his time on the mound. He threw a 48.5 strike percentage with two strikeouts.
Glasgow outhit Glendive 14-5 over the course of the game and were led by Hansen, 3-for-3 at bat, and Sprague, 3-for-4 at bat. Hunter and Rhoads both had two hits while Juliun Benson, Laumeyer, Plummer and Richards had one a piece.
Rhoads led the Reds in RBIs with five, followed by Hunter with three. Hansen, Sprague and Plummer each had two RBIs. Hansen again led in stolen bases with two, followed by Juliun Benson, Kolstad and Sprague with one each.
Glasgow hit the field against Lovell, on Saturday, dropping the game 8-7 after a seventh-inning score by Lovell.
The Reds led 3-1 after the first inning. Glasgow's first three batters scored when Hansen and Kolstad crossed the plate on error by Lovell's right fielder with Rhoads at bat. Juliun Benson scored when Rhoads hit a ground ball to center field. Lovell answered with a run in the bottom of the inning.
Glasgow was unable to convert any runners into scorers in the top of the second and Lovell scored five times in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-3 lead over the Reds.
The Reds were able to score twice in the top of the third to cut into Lovell's lead. Sprague scored after tagging up when Hunter was out on a fly ball to center field. Jeramiah Benson scored on a passed ball with Richards at the plate. Glasgow sent Lovell back to the field after a three-up, three-down performance in the bottom of the third.
Lovell shut Glasgow out in the top of the fourth and then scored a single fun in the bottom to take a two-run lead into the fifth, where neither team scored.
Juliun Benson started the top of the sixth with a triple to right field then scored when Rhoads grounded out. Sprague scored on a Jeramiah Benson ground ball to center field to tie the game.
Glasgow was unable to pull ahead in the seventh inning and Lovell five batters into the bottom of the inning to prevent extra innings.
Plummer took the loss for the Reds. He allowed seven runs on six hits in three and two-thirds innings. He threw 79 pitches in his time on the mound with two strikeouts and a 59.5 strike percentage. Richards came in as relief, hurling 42 pitches over three innings. He allowed one run on three hits with a 57.1 strike percentage.
The Reds were outhit by a slim margin, 9-8, in the game. Juliun Benson and Jeramiah Benson both went 2-for-3 at the plate. Hansen, Kolstad, Rhoads and Richards notched a hit each. Rhoads had two RBIs to lead Glasgow and Jeramiah Benson and Hunter added one each. Jeramiah Benson led in stolen bases with two. Hansen, Richards and Sprague stole one base each.
The loss to Lovell pitted Glasgow against Watford City in the consolation game, which they dropped 11-6.
Watford City took the early lead with a run in the bottom of the first, seven in the second, one in the third and one in the fourth, all the while keeping the Reds from crossing the plate.
Glasgow found their offense in the top of the fifth with five runs, powered by Rhoads and Laumeyer. Rhoads homered to center field and drove Kolstad and Juliun Benson home. Lauemeyer hit a fly ball to right field to send Jeramiah Benson and Richards all the way around the bases.
Watford City added another run in the bottom of the inning to pad their lead. Glasgow scored again in the sixth when Juliun Benson scored after tagging up when Rhoads hit a fly out to center field. However, the late scoring run by the Reds was not enough to overcome the lead built up by Watford City.
Beau Malnaa took the loss for Glasgow, pitching for one and one-third innings. He allowed three runs on one hit with a 44.1 strike percentage. Grimes threw for two-thirds of inning, allowing five runs on three hits with a 44.4 strike percentage.
Aiden Price pitched for two innings, allowing three runs on three hits with one strikeout and a 42.2 strike percentage. Rhoads finished out the game on the mound for the Reds. He allowed no runs on one hit. He threw two strikeouts with a 75.0 strike percentage.
Glasgow was outhit 8-5 in the game. Juliun Benson, Rhoads, Jeramiah Benson, Plummer and Laumeyer each had a hit. Rhoads led in RBIs with four while Laumeyer added two. Jeramiah Benson and Hansen each had stolen base in the game.
The Reds hosted the Glendive Blue Devils Tuesday night for a doubleheader. They return to the field Friday, June 17, for a home doubleheader against the Richland County Patriots. Games at Bob Connors Field begin at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.
Glasgow travels to Williston to take on the Oilers Sunday, June 19, with games at 4 and 6 p.m. MDT/5 and 7 p.m., Central. Tuesday, June 21, they host the Billings Upper Deck with games at 3 and 5 p.m. They travel to Glendive Wednesday, June 22, for a double header against the Blue Devils with games at 5 and 7 p.m
