Glasgow Reds Win First Home Game

The Glasgow Reds kicked off their 2022 season this past week with a road trip to Miles City Thursday before hosting the Laurel Dodgers at home Sunday. Glasgow dropped both road games to a tough Mavs team by scores of 12-2 and 13-0. At home they split their double header against the Dodgers, winning 7-6 before dropping game two 16-3.

The Reds ran up against some tough defense and strong pitching by the Miles City Mavs in their first night of play. Miles City leaped out to an early lead in game one and did not look back.

Miles City shut Glasgow down for the first three innings while putting up two runs in the bottom of the first and four in the third.

The Reds found their bats briefly in the top of the fourth with two runs. Tatum Hansen scored on a JT Sprague pop fly to shortstop. Jeramiah Benson scored when Beau Malnaa was walked. Glasgow's offensive streak was ended on a pop out.

The Mavs responded with three more runs in the bottom of the fourth and three in the fifth to secure the win in five innings.

Mason Hunter took the loss for Glasgow. He threw a 66.1 strike percentage with five strikeouts in three innings. He allowed six runs on six hits. Toryn Richards relieved him on the mound, allowing six runs on four hits. He threw a 58.1 strike percentage.

The Reds were outhit 10-3 in the game. Hansen, Juliun Benson and JT Sprague each notched a hit for Glasgow. Sprague and Malnaa had one RBI a piece while Hansen and Malnaa each stole a base.

Miles City showed less mercy in game two of the doubleheader. The home team put up four runs in the first, another four in the second, sent one runner home in the third and scored four times in the fourth. The Mavs shut Glasgow out in their five turns at the plate to end the game in the fifth.

Malnaa started the game on the mound for Glasgow, throwing 23 pitches in the first inning with a 39.1 strike percentage. He allowed four runs on three hits. Jack Kolstad came in as relief, taking the loss for Glasgow. He threw a 34.3 strike percentage and allowed four runs on three hits. Rance Rhoads threw for an inning with a 61.3 strike percentage. He allowed one run on one hit. Jon Grimes threw a 65.0 strike percentage as the final pitcher for the Reds, allowing four runs on three hits.

The Reds were outhit 10-1 in the game. Hansen went 1-for-1 at the plate to lead Glasgow. He also registered two stolen bases.

Sunday Glasgow hosted the Laurel Dodgers for their home opener. The Reds came out on top of a back-and-forth game one.

Laurel registered the first run of the game in the top of the first before shutting Glasgow out in the bottom of the inning. Glasgow returned the favor in the top of the second before lighting up the scoreboard themselves when Jordan Plummer sent Juliun Benson home on a double line drive to center field.

The Reds allowed the Dodgers one run in the top of the third but responded with three runners crossing the plate for the home team in the bottom of the inning.

Juliun Benson sent Hansen home with a ground ball to second base. Rhoads then batted Hunter home with a grounder to the Dodgers' pitcher. On the next at-bat, Juliun Benson scored on a Jeramiah Benson line drive to to left field.

Each team was only able to send three batters to the plate in the fourth. Glasgow ended Laurel's turn at the plate with a ground out and two fly outs. The Dodgers registered a fly out then picked off Kolstad at first before Hansen grounded out.

Laurel scored three times in the top of the fifth but Glasgow fought back with another two runs for the home team. Juliun Benson scored on the throw with Jeramiah Benson at the plate. Jeramiah Benson pulled the same move with Richards at bat next.

The sixth inning saw neither team score a run but Laurel tied the game in top of the seventh before Glasgow ended the Dodgers' time at bat. Richards hit a single as the fifth Reds batter in the bottom of the seventh to send Hunter home for the win.

Sprague started the game on the mound for Glasgow, throwing 66 pitches over three innings with a 53.0 strike percentage. He allowed two funs on four hits with three strikeouts.

Juliun Benson earned the save for the Reds, throwing 55 pitches over the final four innings with a 60.0 strike percentage. He allowed four runs on six hits with one strikeout.

The Reds outhit the Dodgers 12-10 in the win. Juliun Benson went 3-for-3 at bat to lead Glasgow while Rhoads and Richards both went 2-for-4. Hansen, Hunter and Jeramiah Benson each notched a hit. Glasgow had five RBIs, split evenly between Juliun Benson, Rhoads, Jeramiah Benson, Richards and Plummer. Hansen had the only stolen base for the Reds.

The Dodgers came back hard in the second game to take a 16-3 win back to Laurel powered by a 10-run fourth inning offensive explosion.

Laurel went up 3-0 after one and added another run in the third before taking their lead to 14-0.

Glasgow scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Kolstad sent Jon Grimes home with a ground ball to shortstop. Richards scored on a passed ball with Hunter at the plate and Kolstad scored when Hansen was hit by a pitch, advancing all the runners.

Plummer started the game for the Reds on the mound, going just over three innings. He allowed eight runs on 10 hits while throwing two strikeouts with a 73.8 strike percentage. Malnaa took the loss for Glasgow, allowing four runs and no hits with a 23.8 strike percentage. Kolstad relieved him with a 45.5 strike percentage, allowing two runs on one hit. Aiden Price finished out the game for the Reds with a 57.9 strike percentage. He allowed two runs on to hits.

Glasgow was outhit 13-3. Richards, Kolstad and Hunter notched the hits for Glasgow while Hansen and Kolstad had Glasgow's two RBIs.

The Reds will be in North Dakota Thursday through Sunday, June 9-12, for the Watford City Tournament. They play Dickinson at 11:30 a.m. Mountain/12:30 p.m Central on Thursday then face Rapid City at 2 p.m. Mountain/3 p.m. Central on Friday. Saturday they play Lovell, Wyoming at 9 a.m. Mountain/10 a.m. Central. The Sunday games will be based on pool play.
