Ice Dawgs Give Bighorns H-E- (Double Hockey Sticks) on Ice

Glasgow Wins First-Ever High School State Championship

Glasgow rolled through the state tournament in Miles City the past weekend undefeated and beat the Helena Bighorns for the third time in four match-ups over two weeks to win the Ice Dawgs their first-ever High School championship.

Glasgow defeated Salmon 5-1 in their first game Thursday and followed it up with a 6-4 win over Helena on Friday. The win pitted them against Bozeman that evening when the Dawgs downed the Dogs 1-0. Glasgow then won a high scoring game over Miles City 7-6.

The win over the Generals set the Dawgs up for a rematch against Helena, their fourth meeting in two weeks. Glasgow earned a 4-2 win over the Bighorns to bring home the hardware and the banner.

Glasgow scored first in their game against Salmon. Colter Barnett netted a short-handed goal with Gage Siefert in the penalty box for elbowing. Salmon answered with a power play goal by Carter Bill just over a minute later in what would prove to be their only goal of the game. Trevor Dulaney put Glasgow ahead before the end of the first.

Barnett scored the only goal of the second period to put Glasgow up by two at intermission.

The senior Ice Dawg would score the last two of the game as well, earning himself a hat trick-plus. Siefert assisted on the first goal and Barnett's second of the third period came on the man-advantage.

Glasgow went 1-for-3 on power plays while giving Salmon six man-advantages on 22 minutes of penalties off seven infractions.

In addition to Siefert's elbowing call, Zevin Kummerfeldt sat for roughing in the first.

Tatum Hansen, slashing; Barnett, roughing; Michael Hoyer, high sticking; Peyton Hubbard, abuse of officials, and Mason Hunter, roughing, all earned trips to the sin bin in the second period. Glasgow played a clean third period.

Glasgow put 37 pucks on Salmon's goaltender, Trenton Harris, while Kolten Hansen faced 39 attempts on the Dawgs' net. K. Hansen turned in a 97.4 save percentage in the win.

The Dawgs returned to the ice on Friday to face the Bighorns in what was now a rivalry game. Glasgow and Helena had split their final games of the regular season in Glasgow the weekend prior. Helena won the first game 7-1 in Glasgow but the Dawgs fought back in their final game to win 3-2 in sudden death overtime.

Glasgow did not need overtime to defeat Helena at the state tournament but the teams battled through all 51 minutes of play.

Barnett lit the lamp for the Dawgs just 51 seconds into the game but Helena's Lance Baumgart evened the tally four minutes later. Quill Keller put the Bighorns ahead with six-and-a-half minutes left in the first period, but Barnett netted a power play goal with less than three minutes before the buzzer to tie the game 2-2 at the end of the first period.

Keller got the lead back for Helena on a power play with Lex Fairclough in Glasgow's penalty box for roughing. But again Barnett answered to keep the game as tight as could be.

Siefert scored a power play goal just 27 seconds into the final period to give the Dawgs another lead. Keller knotted the game midway through the period for Helena.

Glasgow's special teams came into play – though not in the way one might expect. Barnett scored two goals with a Dawg sitting in the box. With just under five minutes left, Barnett scored his first shortie with help from Fairclough. The second shortie came with 2:10 left in the game and help from Michael Hoyer.

Glasgow notched 35 shots on Helena's Lowek Vonada while Aidin Wilkowski had an 81.8 save percentage on 22 Helena shots.

The Bighorns and the Ice Dawgs made the officials earn their money in the game, racking up 88 penalty minutes on 20 infractions for Helena and 46 minutes on 11 penalties by Glasgow.

Josh Llewellyn served the team's too many men on the ice penalty in the first period.

Fairclough, roughing, and Kummerfeldt, hooking, took seats in the box in the second. T. Hansen drew a 2-and-10 on a boarding and misconduct call also in the second.

Hunter served a roughing call in the third while Connor Koski drew the officials' ire for unsportsmanlike conduct and interference. T. Hansen drew a 2-and-10 for head contact as well as 10-minute unsportsmanlike game misconduct call, resulting in a two-game suspension.

The win over Helena pitted the Dawgs against the Ice Dogs of Bozeman that afternoon. The game proved to be a showdown between goalies as the only goal of the game came with just 5:13 left in the game. Hoyer scored the even strength goal with an assist from Barnett to end the scoring stalemate.

Glasgow put 30 shots on Joe Johnson, the Ice Dogs goalie. K. Hansen earned the shutout victory, turning away 28 Dogs' pucks.

The two teams gave officials an easier time with the Dogs drawing only 4 penalties and the Dawgs limiting theirs to two. Dulaney drew an unsportsmanlike conduct call in the second and Kummerfeldt took a seat for holding in the third.

Glasgow turned up the offense in their next appearance on the ice Saturday when they downed the Generals 7-6.

Miles City struck first taking advantage of Barnett's time in the box for hooking. Anthony Moorehead scored the goal for the Generals within a minute and a half of the clock starting. Hoyer evened the tally shortly after with help from Barnett and Hubbard.

Isaac Patten put the Generals ahead just under two minutes later but the period was far from over. Hoyer netted his second goal to tie the game with an assist from Siefert midway through the period. Barnett gave Glasgow their first lead less than 30 seconds later with help from Siefert.

Hoyer added another to the Dawgs' lead on a power play with assists from Hubbard and Hunter. Miles City's Mason Chapmon cut the Glasgow's lead in half with just eight seconds before the buzzer.

The goalies stole the spotlight in the second period as each shut the other's team out. K. Hansen turned away 11 attempts in the second while Charlie Lang defended the Miles City net from 18 Glasgow shots.

The offenses were back out in force in the third with three goals for each team. Miles City CJ Lang tied the game less than five minutes into the final 17 but Barnett was there to answer nine seconds later. Kummerfeldt put Glasgow up by two on a power play with help from Hoyer and Hubbard.

Kameron Lockie brought the Generals back with one with under six minutes left. Barnett took the Dawgs' lead back to two goals just 23 seconds later as he put in Glasgow's seventh goal. Chapmon brought the Generals within one again with under three minutes to play, but the Dawgs held on to their lead until the final buzzer.

Lang faced 44 shots by Glasgow. K. Hansen faced 49 attempts after relieving Wilkowski in net. Wilkowski had allowed two goals on two shots, giving the team an 88.2 save percentage.

Miles City served 22 minutes on seven penalties while Glasgow held their infractions to four.

Barnett served a hooking call in the first. In the second Dulaney served time for hooking and Hubbard sat for interference. Fairclough was sent to the penalty box in the third for tripping.

Glasgow's fourth win of the tournament put them in the noon chipper on Sunday where they would once again face the Helena Bighorns.

Though less chippy than their previous match-up, the officials still found plenty of work as Helena racked up 28 minutes in the box on 10 infractions. Glasgow drew a mere 10 minutes on five penalties.

Hoyer lit the lamp first at 15:17 with assists from T. Hansen and Aiden Price. Corbin Reighard tied the game with just over four and a half minutes left in the first.

Karsen Bushnell put the Bighorns ahead 25 seconds later. But Glasgow had T. Hansen back on the ice. And he was ready to make up for his missed games. He made full use of Glasgow's man advantage with under three minutes left in the first. Hubbard and Hoyer assisted on the tying goal.

The second period again belonged to the goalies. Vonada turned away 17 shots by Glasgow while K. Hansen shut down Helena's four attempts on his home.

K. Hansen turned the show over to T. Hansen in the third. Less than five minutes into the final period, T. Hansen netted an even strength goal with an assist from Barnett to give the Dawgs the lead.

Down a goal with the state championship on the line Helena pulled Vonada for the extra skater. Off a face off, T. Hansen sent the puck the length of the ice and into the Bighorns net with 1:06 left on the clock. Glasgow held off Helena as the seconds ticked by.

When the horn sounded, the Glasgow Ice Dawgs had won their first ever high school banner.

T. Hansen served time in the first for tripping and in the second for roughing. Fairclough was called for unsportsmanlike in the second and tripping in the third. Kummerfeldt served a tripping call in the secon period.

Glasgow put 42 pucks on Vonada's net. At the other end of the ice, K. Hansen saw 27 shots, giving him a 92.6 save percentage in the big game.

Glasgow captain, and senior appearing in his final Ice Dawgs game, Colter Barnett said, "It feels absolutely amazing to bring home the first high school banner to end my senior year. It honestly does take a team to play hockey successfully and that was the key to the weekend. Everyone on the team gave everything they had in order for us to win the small battles, and move the puck to one another to finish the big battle. I could not be happier with the team and how my final Ice Dawg season ended."

Barnett, T. Hansen and Hoyer were selected Big Sky High School League All-State. Barnett was named Big Sky High School League Most Valuable Player. Barnett led the Ice Dawgs as captain wieht 12 goals and four assists on the weekend.
