NC Boys 1-1 on the Weekend

The North Country boys basketball team lost to the Lions, 71-29, in Lustre Jan. 14 but rebounded the next night in Hinsdale, downing the Frazer Bearcubs 83-37.

Lustre Christian, who is marching through the season, outscored North Country 18-6 in the first quarter and led 43-17 at the half.

After halftime, North Country put up 6 points in each the third and four quarters, but Lustre Christian added 21 and 7 in the same time periods.

Trey Johnson scored 14 points, going 6-for-8 on free throws, to lead the Mavericks. Aiden Albus added 12 points for North Country. Kade Strommen scored 2 and Coy Bowman added 1 point.

The Mavericks were called for 13 fouls, only two in the second half. Bowman and Strommen had three each while Taylor Mogan and Johnson were called for two a piece. Blaine Downing, Marshall Caves and Albus had one foul each.

In Hinsdale on Saturday, the Mavericks exploded offensively. They put 27 points on the scoreboard in the first eight minutes while holding Frazer to 11. North Country added another 22 in the second quarter while the Bearcubs had 10 points.

After the break, the Mavericks outscored the Bearcubs 25-9 in the third and 9-7 in the fourth.

Johnson led all scorers with 23 points including a three-pointer. Downing, Albus and BOwman also hit double digits with 20, 18 and 10 points, respectively. Strommen put up 6, Mogan 4 and Andrew Boucher 2 points.

The Mavericks had 13 fouls, six in the second half. Walker Albus and Downing were called for three each, Mogan, Strommen and A. Albus 2 a piece, and Johnson one.

North Country hosts the Dodson Coyotes in Whitewater Friday, Jan. 21. The girls play at 6 p.m. followed by the boys at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, they travel to Circle for a girls game at 4 p.m. and a boys game at 5:30 p.m.
