Remember When For Jan. 5, 2021

Greetings and Happy New Year to all readers! I would say that my New Year’s resolution is to get my articles to The Courier weekly, but then I know that most resolutions are made to be broken so let me say I will just try and do better.

Do you remember the large floor grate that was found in most homes in by gone days? This was the furnace vent and provided a great place to stand and warm yourself up after a jaunt outside in winter’s fridge weather. That was in the day before many women wore jeans, sweats, etc., only dresses. What a wonderful way to get warm. I am going to say that there wasn’t any fan mechanism as there was always warm air rising whenever you needed a warm up. Did those furnaces even operate on thermostats then? Just some food for thought, and a reminder to count our blessings. I can remember the days of fuel oil, wood and coal stoves. Of course thankfully I was not of an age that I had to worry about getting wood or coal to the stove, or having to remove ashes.

I do remember our house having a coal chute that was eventually removed, maybe replaced by a basement window. Now we just pray we don’t lose power.
