North Country Girls Win Two

North Country Mavericks

It was another great weekend for the Lady Mavericks as they headed down to the Lewistown Holiday Classic Tournament.

They started out with a rematch of the State C Championship game last year, Fort Benton. The Lady Mavericks were able to come out with a solid victory winning 49-23 over the Lady Longhorns.

The girls came out focused and aggressive on both ends of the floor. Paige Wasson led the charge with 19 points and 7 rebounds, Jaycee Erickson 12 points, 5 rebounds and 4 steals, Teagan Erickson finished with 9 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals.

Saturday morning was a replay of the State C Semifinals where the Lady Mavericks were able to pull out a 5 points. victory over the Winifred/Roy Lady Outlaws advancing them into the State Championship game a year ago. This time it would be a game of two halves.

The Lady Outlaws got on the scoreboard first but the Lady Mavericks responded, outscoring them 19-5 in the second quarter and going into the half with a 14 pt. lead.

The second half the momentum shifted and the Lady Outlaws used their size to get easy buckets inside and eventually walk away with a 3 pt victory over the Lady Mavericks 42-39.

Statistically Jaycee Erickson led the way with 13 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists, Teagan Erickson finished with 12 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals and Paige Wasson finished with 8 points and 3 rebounds. Mattea McColly and Kendall Scheffelmear each contributed 5 rebounds as well.

It felt great to get a solid win over Fort Benton on Friday after they handed us our only loss last season in the State Championship Game.

Winifred/Roy is probably the class C favorite this season and to play them so tough this early in the season when we are still figuring out our strengths and roles was awesome! They have a couple big, strong girls that gave us some troubles down low, but we can make adjustments now down the road if we get another shot at them in the post season.

I am very happy with where we are at right now sitting 3-1 after facing 3 opponents that played Saturday night at state last year. The girls are working hard, have great team chemistry and it's going to be another exciting season for us.
