'Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow'

Cold Snap Comes to Valley County

After record high temps, winter arrived early in Valley County Saturday with four inches of snow accumulating on the ground, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Glasgow Office.

"We actually had a high temperature of 69 on the Dec. 1. Unofficially, we got to 70," said Ted Jamba, NWS Glasgow Meteorologist. "Then, the temperatures started falling starting Thursday. I think today [Monday] has been the coldest day so far. We've got 8 degrees right now [at 2 p.m.]. It is pretty cool."

Highs beginning last Wednesday were 69, 54 on Thursday, 35 for Friday, 29 for Saturday, 28 for Sunday and 9 on Monday.

"I think the wind is what people are complaining about the most," Jamba said.

The cold snap swept through the area Sunday morning, Jamba continued.

"You probably saw the visibility drop quite a bit at 10 a.m. That was an arctic front that came from Alaska through Alberta and then to here. We got a lot of blowing snow in the Glasgow area from that arctic front."

More snow, about 1/2 an inch, was expected in Valley County Monday afternoon and evening.

Despite a shift of high temperatures over a range of about 60 degrees, such instances are not uncommon in the Big Sky State, Jamba added.

"Once in a while we will get something like this every winter," he said. "The normal high temperature is about 31 degrees this time of year. It is colder than normal, but you are in Montana. The temperatures are never at normal. It seems they are either above or below."
