Glasgow Middle School Harriers Compete in Poplar

FOR THE COURIER

Glasgow Middle School's girls cross country runners took second place in team standings at the Poplar Invitational last Saturday. The GMS boys, with only 4 runners, didn't have enough personnel to form a complete team

For the second race in as many weeks, the GMS girls were paced by 8th grader Kimber Dulaney, who took fourth place overall with a time of 10:17, less than a second behind the third-place runner. Seventh-grader Haleigh Huntsman took 6th place in 10:36 for the 1.5-mile course. Josie Kemp finished in 11th place in 10:53. Glasgow's other scorers included Jensina Tweten, in 23rd place in 11:41, and Aspen Probert, 45th place in 14:55.

Other runners for GMS included Willow Sugg, who took 48th place in 15:03, Chloe Lamb, 49th in 15:03, Karsyn Page, 61st in 15:48, and Rebekah Bailey, 66th in 16:53.

The Scotties tallied 89 team points, behind first-place Poplar's 65 points, but ahead of teams from Wolf Point, Frazer, and Frontier School.

On the boys side, Glasgow failed to field a full team, but the Scotties were led by 6th grader Garrett Thompson, who ran the 1.5-mile course in 10:59 to take 25th place. Right behind him was teammate Timothy Pearson, 26th in 11:10, and Rowen Kloker, who took 28th place in 11:11. Glasgow's other runner was Aaron Mickelson, who took 49th place with his run of 15:46.

"We were disappointed not to have a full boys team, but we were encouraged by the pack running shown by Garret, Timothy, and Rowen," says Julia Bengochea, GMS assistant coach. "That's something we've worked on in every practice, and they really put it to use in Poplar."

Bengochea was pleased with performances by the top Scottie girls, but says that in order to beat a talented Poplar squad, Glasgow's fourth and fifth scorers need to work up in both time and place.

The GMS squads are at home next weekend, hosting a middle school meet at Sullivan Park on Saturday, Sept. 11. Racing starts at 10 a.m. for the boys, with the girls race to follow about 10:45.

Head GMS Coach Andrew McKean encourages any community support and help.

"We expect to have anywhere from 10 to a dozen schools here, with as many as 100 runners, and getting them through the finish chute and all their names and places recorded can be chaotic, so we're looking for anyone who wants to witness some great racing but also can help us manage the meet," says McKean. Contact him at 263-5442 or Coach Bengochea at 263-1776 if you can help or want to know more about volunteer opportunities.
