Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913
The North Country Mavericks kicked off their 2021 volleyball season in Malta on Aug. 28. The team had two pool play matches and three tournament bracket matches, finishing in fourth place overall.
In pool play, the Mavericks lost to Plentywood 26-24 and defeated Poplar 25-8. North Country split a match with Harlem, 25-12, 24-25, winning by total number of points. They fell to the host Mustangs 12-25, 24-25. That set them up to face Circle for the consolation game. In a tight contest the teams split with Circle winning a game 25-21 and the Mavericks taking a 25-24 victory.
Coach Char Wasson was pleased with her team, saying her young players gained valuable experience. “We had to replace four seniors from last season,” she said, “but I would tell you I was impressed by how this team hustled after the ball and got their hands on the ball.” Wasson said her team will be working on serving and timing as they move forward but that the team progressed as the tournament did. She added, “Overall was a great first weekend of play.”
