GMS Cross Country Runners Open Season in Wolf Point

FOR THE COURIER

Glasgow Middle School's girls cross country runners finished a single point out of first place in their first meet of the season, a 1.55-mile course in Wolf Point last Friday. The Scottie boys, with only five runners, finished in fourth place.

The girls were paced by 8th grader Kimber Dulaney, who took second place overall with a time of 10:30. The Scotties' other scorers were Haleigh Huntsman, who placed 6th overall in 11:10, just ahead of Josie Kemp, 7th in 11:22. Jensina Tweten, in 26th place in 12:33, and Caylen Jankowski, 31st in 13:34, rounded out the Glasgow scorers.

Other Glasgow runners included Aspen Probert, 39th in 14:30; Willow Sugg, 48th in 16:00; Rebekah Bailey, 51st in 16:28; Karsyn Sillerud, 55th in 16:53; and Chloe Lamb, 56th in 17:10.

As a team, the GMS girls tallied 50 points, a single point behind first-place Poplar. Other schools that fielded complete teams included Sidney, Wolf Point, Frontier, and Frazer. Circle, Culbertson, Fairview, Nashua, and Scobey competed but didn't have enough runners to qualify for team scores.

On the boys side, Glasgow tallied 75 points to finish in 4th place, behind Sidney, Culbertson, and Poplar. The Scotties were led by 6th grader Garrett Thompson, who took 17th place in 11:15. Teammate Rowen Kloker was right behind, finishing in 19th place in 11:26. Glasgow's other placers were Timothy Pearson, 29th in 11:49; Jack Milam, who finished in 34th place with a time of 12:17; and Aaron Mickelson, who took 51st place with his run of 16:08.

"Our numbers are down a bit, especially on the boys side, but I was pleased with how the runners pushed themselves and each other," says GMS coach Andrew McKean. "You could certainly tell that the veteran runners, including Kimber, Haleigh, and Josie, know how to pace themselves, pass strategically, and when to kick into higher gear."

McKean said he was also happy to see teammates encourage each other and even runners from rival schools.

The GMS Scotties travel to Poplar this Saturday before returning to Sullivan Park for a middle-school-only meet on Saturday, Sept. 11. Racing starts at 10 a.m. for the boys, with the girls race to follow about 10:45.

"It's a good opportunity for the community to come out and cheer on these hard-working runners," says McKean, who noted that the coaches are looking for any volunteers to help marshal the course, time runners, and work the finish line. "Normally our high school runners officiate this meet, but they're in Havre on Sept. 11, so we're looking for any community help we can get."
