NEMT Fair PRCA Rodeo Returns to Glasgow

The Canadians may have brought their "Eh" game to the Northeast Montana Fair's rodeo this year, but Montanans claimed the most number of top spots. Montana competitors won bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling – go-rounds 1 and 2, and barrel racing.

The 2021 PRCA Rodeo, back on this year after a COVID-19 hiatus last year, featured top rodeo contenders from all across North America. Contestants from as far away as Louisiana showed up in Glasgow to earn points on the rodeo circuit and entertain fans in Valley County.

Caleb Bennett of Corvallis, Mont., won go-round 1 of bareback riding. He scored 86 points riding Wild Night. Ty Breuer, Mandan, N.D., took second with 85 points atop All Pink. Clint Laye, of Cadogan, Alberta, was just a half-point behind him, scoring 84.5 points on Honey Hawk to earn third place. Hunter Green, in from Bastrop, La., earned a fourth place finish riding Straight Stick for 79 points. Kalispell, Mont.'s Dalton Finley May earned 77.5 points and fifth place with a ride on Monster In Law. Finishing in sixth place with 76 points was Troy Kirkpatrick out of Wise River, Mont., who rode Dilly Bar.

Houston Garrett Brown, Miles City, Mont., won saddle bronc riding, taking first place with 85 points atop Willow Brook. Beaver, Utah's Ryder Wright placed second on Big Sky with 84 points. Cort Scheer of Bluff Dale, Texas earned 83.5 points and third place, also riding Big Sky. Kolby Wanchuk of Sherwood Park, Alberta, placed fourth with 82 points riding Flaming Shadow. Damian Brenna, Snyder, Texas; Jacob Kammerer, Philip, S.D., and Q Taylor, Parkland, Alberta, tied for fifth place, all with 81 points. Brenna rode Tipped Off, Kammerer was on Night Deposit and Taylor rode Quitting Time. Jesse Wright of Milford, Utah placed eighth with 79.5 points atop Just Bugs.

Wylee Hurst of Rigby, Idaho, earned the only qualifying ride in bull riding. His eight seconds on Billie the Kid earned him 79.5 points and first place.

A Montanan also won the steer wrestling go-round 1. Augusta's Ross Mosher won the event in 4.1 seconds. Cyler Dowling, of Newell, S.D., finished second with a time of 4.5 seconds and Scott Guenther of Provost, Alberta was directly behind him with a time of 4.6 seconds in third place. Joe Nelson, Watford City, N.D., and Tanner Milan, Cochrane, Alberta, tied for fourth after finishing in 4.7 seconds. Bode Scott of Pryor, Mont. was sixth with a time of 4.8 seconds.

Caden Camp, Belgrade, Mont., tied with Cameron Morman of Glen Ullin, N.D. for first place in steer wrestling go-round 2, as both men recorded a time of 3.8 seconds. In third place was Denver Roy of Dalemead, Alberta, with at time of 4.3 seconds, followed closely by Joe Nelson, Watford City, in fourth with a time of 4.4 seconds and Scott Guenthner, Provost, in fifth at 4.5 seconds. Four wrestlers tied for sixth place with a time of 4.6 seconds: Bode Scott, Pryor, Mont.; Ryan Shuckburgh, Innisfail, Alberta; Riley Wakefield, ONeill, Neb., and J.D. Steen, Billings, Mont.

Overall Morman won the aggregate steer wrestling at 9.0. Guenthner and Nelson tied for second at 9.1. Scott and Milan tied for fourth at 9.4. and Wakefield finished in sixth with 9.5.

In go-round 1 of tie down roping, Clayton Smith of Eckville, Alberta was in first with a time of 8.5 seconds. Wakefield was in second with 8.7 seconds. Rance Marshall Johnson, Philip, S.D., and J.C. Crowley, Poplar, Mont., tied for third finishing in 9.0 seconds while Clint Kindred, Oral, S.D., and Brock Belkham, Flandreau, S.D, tied for fifth with their time of 9.1 seconds.

Jake Pratt of Elllesburg, Wash., came out on top in go-round 2 of tie down roping, finishing in 8.3 seconds. Jade Gardner of Winnett, Mont., was in second with a time of 8.8 seconds and Joe Schmidt finished in third with 8.9 seconds. Wakefield and Tyler Boxleitner tied for fourth after completing the roping in 9.1 seconds while Clayton Smith of Eckville, Alberta finished in sixth place with a time of 9.7 seconds.

In aggregate times, Wakefield won in 17.8 while Pratt took second place with 18.2. Smith claimed third with 18.2 and Marshall Johnson was in fourth with 18.8. Boxleitner's 19.0 put him in fifth place and a 19.2 earned Schmidt sixth.

Derrick Begay, Seba Dalkai, Ariz., and Cory Petska, Marana, Ariz., came out on top of team roping go-round 1 with a time of 4.7 seconds. Braden Pirrung, Hartford, S.D., and Coley Nicholls, Kinnear, Wyo., placed second with a time of 4.8 seconds. Clay Ullery, Valleyview, Alberta, and Matt Zancanella, Aurora, S.D., tied with Riley Minor, Ellensburg, Wash., and Brady Minor, Ellensburg, Wash., for third place after completing the roping in 4.9 seconds. Ian Austiguy, Gallatin Gateway, Mont., and Sam Levine, Wolf Creek, Mont., tied with Ranner D. Pallesen, Manila, Utah, and Arye Espenscheid, Big Piney, Wyo., with 5.1 seconds for fifth place.

Cash Duty, Wiemar, Texas, and Matt Schieck, Floresville, Texas won team roping go-round 2 with a time of 3.7 seconds while Garret Rogers, Baker City, Ore., and Jake Minor, Ellensburg, Wash., took second with 4.3 seconds. Riley Minor and Brady Minor placed third with 4.7 seconds and Logan Olson, Flandreau, S.D., and Matt Kasner, Cody, Neb., took fourth with their time of 4.8 seconds. In fifth place were Chase Wiley, Pleasanton, Texas, and Joel Galvan, Jr., Cotulia, Texas with their time of 4.9 seconds. Clint Summers, Lake City, Fla., and Ross Ashford, Lott, Texas, finished in 5.1 seconds and sixth place.

Riley Minor and Brady Minor took the top slot in aggregate results for team roping with 9.6. Cooper White, Hershey, Neb., and Tucker White, Hershey, earned second with 10.8. In third with 11.5 were Pallesen and Espensheid. Austiguy and Levine took fourth with 11.6 as Walton Dalton Bray, Granbury, Texas, and Mason Pitts, Haughton, La., took fifth with 11.8. Nutter and Wakefield rounded out the top six with 11.9.

Calgary's Shelby Boisjoli took the ladies breakaway competition with her time of 2.30. Cadee Williams, Weatherford, Texas, placed second with a time of 2.50. Talea Harrell, Roy, Mont., placed finished in 2.60 for third place, tied with Martha Angelone, Stephenville, Texas, and Sarah Verheilst, Pryor, Mont. Madison Wilkerson, Bozeman, Mont., and Bethanie Shofner, Las Cruces, N.M., tied for sixth place with their times of 2.70.

Ladies Barrel Racing had the most number of contestants in the money, with 12 women hitting payday. Montanans claimed six of the 12 slots, including Terri Kaye Kirkland of Billings who won the event in 17.35 seconds. Megan Champion, Ukiah, Calif., placed second with her time of 17.62 seconds. Kelley Carrington's, Boston, Ga., 17.65 seconds earned her third place while Tia Murphy of Cut Bank, Mont., took fourth with 17.68 seconds. In fifth place was Jimmie Smith of McDade, Texas with her time of 17.70. Sherry Cervi of Marana, Ariz., finished in 17.72 seconds and sixth place.

Poplar's Heather Crowley finished in seventh place in 17.73 seconds. Huntley, Mont.'s Callahan Tryan tied with Ashley Castlebberry of Montgomery, Texas, for eighth place with 17.74 seconds. Nicole Bice of Killdeer, N.D., placed 10th with a time of 17.76 with Taylour Russell of Conrad, Mont., right behind her in 11th place with 17.77 seconds. Tayla Moeykens of Three Forks, Mont., rounded out the top 12 money slots with her time of 17.78 seconds.
