As we are suffering through this heat it may help to remember the other extremes.
Do you remember the winter of 1949 & 50?
I do not know the months, and no, I did not call the weather service, but some remember having two nights in a row of -55 degrees on a home thermometer.
Many rural folks heated their homes with stove fuel oil at that time.
Due to the extreme cold the stove fuel gelled up causing the stove to go out.
This might be compared to our current situation and no air-conditioning.
Fortunately, many had electricity by then and were able to thaw their lines by warming the lines with a light bulb. Just a thought — would many of us even think of doing something like that?
Sometimes it helps to be remember that history reminds us that we can survive.
As for myself, I am thankful every day that goes by without a grass fire close by, or to be worried about hurricanes.
I will admit that some of our winds make one think of tornados, however most of us have slipped under the line there.
I am working on thinking positive and hope every one can do the same.
