Glasgow Thunder Storming Through Summer Swim Season

The Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder Swim Team kicked off their 2021 season in Harlem on June 5-6 and followed that up with a trip to Glendive June 12-13. Despite a few hurdles, the team has started their season strong under second-year coach Ethan Shrader. The team returned 38 swimmers from last season and added 20 new competitors for 2021, for a total team membership of 58.

In the their first week, however, only 11 swimmers attended the meet in Harlem, all with just one week of practice under their belts. Shrader said, "Overall, the team is looking great and we are improving every day. I am excited to see what this season will bring us."

In Harlem, Raelee Dowden swam personal bests in and took firsts in the 100 breast and 50 butterfly. Holt Huntsman claimed firsts in the 100 Individual Medley and 50 butterfly. In a tight race, he placed third in the 50 breast. Abby Kulczyk earned personal bests and first place finishes in the 100 breast and 50 butterfly. Shrader noted the young swimmer was only a couple of seconds shy of breaking federation records.

Twenty-five swimmers made the trek to Glendive even though they did not get in the pool to practice all week due to maintenance issues. "All our swimmers swam to their full potential this weekend with amazing time drops nd excellent races," said the coach.

Huntsman dropped almost two full seconds off his times in the 100 freestyle and 50 butterfly. He took second in the freestyle and won the butterfly. Kulczyk placed third in the 50 butterfly and took second in what Shrader called a "nailbiter" in the 100 breast. Grace Reyes and Haleigh Huntsman placed fifth and sixth in the 50 breast, respectively. Shrader said, "Molly Miller took fifth in a beautiful race of the 25 breaststroke."

He added, "The team swam their hearts out this weekend, and not one swimmer left the pool without having to drag themselves out of the water. I consider it a testimony to the work the swimmers left in the pool. I am proud of what they did this weekend and cannot wait to see where our work will take us."

Shrader is working with his team on to swim every stroke as close to proper technique as possible, noting that with that skill set, speed will follow. "I expect that they will all drop time and have fun doing it," he said. The coach has found himself pleasantly surprised with his swimmers, noting they surprise him every day and singling out Molly Miller and Snow Saiz for their 50 meter swims.

He will be looking to Ava Reyes, Dalton Sand and Haylly Turner to lead the Thunder this season but added each age group of kids tries their best to lead with positive attitudes towards practices and meets.

The Thunder will be home this weekend, playing host Saturday and Sunday, June 19 and 20 at the Glasgow Swimming Pool.
