Scotties Finish in Fourth Places at Divisional

Send 18 Athletes to State in Laurel

Both the Scottie boys and girls track teams claimed fourth place finishes at the Northern B Divisional meet in Glasgow this past weekend. "I was a bit disappointed in how we finished on Saturday," head coach Tim Phillips said. "I thought we had a pretty good shot to place to third on both sides, but those little things you sometimes need to fall your way, did not."

The Glasgow girls earned 62.50 points, fishing behind Malta, 99; Conrad, 83.50 and Choteau, 65.60. The Scottie boys put up 55 points, behind first-place Fairfield with 114; Wolf Point with 103 and But Bank with 70 points.

Despite the disappointing team placings, individual athletes turned in a number of outstanding performances. Phillips noted out of 27 performances for the boys, there were 15 personal bests. On the girls side, 13 personal records were turned in on 27 performances. Five of those personal records were set Friday night in the pole vault, which was held at the Valley Event Center over weather concerns. Three more athletes tied their previous best performances.

The girls were first up, vaulting before a crowd of coaches, teammates, parents and fans who were protected from a cold and wet spring evening. Glasgow will be sending Kira Beck, Tyann Graham and Eve Stone to the state meet after Beck set a personal record of 9 feet to finish in second place, Graham tied her best vault at 8-06.00 to place fourth, and Stone cleared 8-00.00, a personal record, to finish in fifth place.

After sweeping the boys' pole vault at the District 2B Meet, Glasgow put four vaulters on the podium at the Northern B Divisional meet. "Stephen [Bailey] had a real challenge from the Cut Bank kid [Brant Seewald], but came away with the win, tying his p.r. at 13 feet," said Phillips. Ted Tryan cleared 12-00.00 and set a personal record to finish in third place. Damien Nesbitt and Colter Cumber finished in fifth and sixth, respectively. Both set personal records as Nesbitt vaulted 11-06.00 and Cumber cleared 11-00. Lane Thompson also set a personal record, but failed to take a spot on the podium.

Saturday morning started at Scottie field with the 3200 meter run and more state-qualifying Scotties. Carl Zabrocki and Thompson took fourth and sixth in the boys' event, both with personal records. "Carl has been struggling to find his stride, this season, but really nailed it to get fourth," Phillips said. In the girls' race, Iris McKean and Emily See took qualifying spots, finishing in second and third, respectively.

Phillips said, "Iris and Emily had real solid days in the distance races." McKean and See will represent Glasgow at the state meet in the 1600 meter run after taking second (McKean, season record) and fourth (See, personal record.) McKean also placed fourth in the 800m.

Thompson, for the Scottie boys, will also run the 1600m at state after taking a sixth place finish in Glasgow. Dalton Sand placed second with personal records in both the 1600m and 800m runs. "Dalton had a fantastic 1600, just letting Zander [Ackerman, Wolf Point] do the work in leading. He cruised to another big personal best at 4:45," Phillips told the Courier. "He also had a great 800m, finishing in second there too, running a 2:04." Reed Larsen finished sixth with a personal record and will also represent Glasgow in the 800 meter run.

Tatum Hansen will compete in both the boys 110m and 300m hurdles at the state meet after taking second place (110m) and fifth place (300m), despite continuing to battle shin splints. Hansen is also a member of the boys' 4x100m relay team, which finished in sixth place. Blake Lloyd, Cumber and Larsen will join Hansen at the state meet. The boys' 4x400 relay team had a three-second record and finished in fifth place, sending Lloyd, Larsen, Devin Nesbitt and Sand to state.

"Ava [Lloyd] had one of the best performances of the day, gutting out a big personal best in the 400m to get sixth," Phillips said. Westby, placed fourth in the event, setting aside her boot to compete in that and the 100m and 200m dashes, though she missed a state trip in the latter two. The girls' 4x400m relay team set another four-second record at the meet and finished in fourth place. Beck, See, Lloyd and McKean earned the trip to state.

In field events, Stone, on the girls' team, took second in the high jump and fifth in the long jump. The freshman just missed a podium spot in the triple jump, according to Phillips.

The Glasgow coach noted that he had several athletes, both boys and girls come close to placing. Scottie fans should expect to see many of these athletes back next season, stronger and faster. Phillips singled out his throwers for praise, saying of Beau Malnaa and Vaughn Miller, "But for as young as our javelin crew is, we look for great things from them next year!" Phillips added that between injuries and some miscalculations, he had athletes who did not perform at the level they could.

Coach Phillips extended his gratitude to all the volunteers who gave their time to make the Divisional meet a success. "We got nothing but good comments on the way our people worked the events."

The coach is setting his sights on the state meet this weekend. "We're looking forward to seeing how well all the kids compete down in Laurel this coming weekend." The 2021 MHSA State A/B Track and Field Meet will be held at the Laurel Sports Complex Thursday through Saturday, May 27-29.
