Glasgow Girls Earn Fourth Straight District 2B Title

Scottie Boys Take Second Place

The Glasgow Scottie girls claimed their fourth District 2B Track title in as many years, and the 19th title in school history. The win was not cemented in Scottie history until the final event of the day. "The girls were up by one point with only the 4x400m relay left," said head coach Tim Phillips. "They had a 4 second p.r. To win the event and seal the win! It was extremely exciting day! Kira [Beck], Emily [See], and Ava [Lloyd] kept us in it and Iris [McKean] sealed the deal!"

Glasgow earned 170 points on the day, outpacing Malta at 165, Wolf Point with 92, Poplar 50 and Harlem 35. Glasgow and Malta were tied with two events remaining, making for a hotly contested 2021 district title.

The Scottie boys were tied with Wolf Point with three events left in the day, but Phillips acknowledged the Wolves outmanned the Scotties in the 200m and expected the host team to take the top slot. The Scottie coach raved about his boys remaining competitive until "the very last step!" He noted Blake Lloyd, in an attempt to gain more Scottie points and demonstrative of the fighting Scottie spirit, took a huge tumble at the end of the 200m. B. Lloyd finished in seventh, just missing a trip to divisionals, but set a personal record at 25.21 seconds.

The Scotties proved to be peaking at just the right time, registering 49 personal records at the district meet – 30 for the boys and 19 for the girls, all on a long, hot day. "It's hard to digest the day, but let's just say our coach staff is extremely proud of all of our kids!" effused Phillips.

"At the start of the meet, Eve Stone and Sheree Cook got us rolling, going 1-2 in the high jump - just moments before Iris and Emily went 1-2 in the 3200m. We got third with the 4x100m relay, and then Eve and Sheree came back and got us a third and a fifth in the long jump. Both had really great jumping days! Eve would go on to get another p.r. in the triple to finish 4th!" Phillips told the Courier. "So I was real happy with Coach Menge's jumpers! He had a lot of inexperienced kids to work with this year, and has made the most out of them."

Phillips also lauded Kira Beck, Blaire Westby, Samantha Tryan, Tyann Graham, He'Lena Stulc, Lloyd, Haylly Turner and See for their performances.

The Scottie coach acknowledged the Glasgow facilities proved to be an asset for his team this year, with the pole vault providing much of the edge for his teams. "One thing we have to say is that we really have an advantage with our facility. It is aging quite a bit but we do have the advantage of the pole vault, and Coach Cap's expertise," Phillips explained. "We swept the boys event and went 1-2-3-4-6 for the girls. Without that, we would have not been in the running at all! For the boys, Damien [Nesbitt] had a big personal best in the vault to finish third. We've been led there by Stephen [Bailey] all year and he continued to vault well, and Ted [Tryan] was just behind, with Colter [Cumber] and Lane [Thompson] finishing the sweep."

The Scottie boys gained points in the two hurdle events with Tatum Hansen and Fynn Sukut taking first and second in each, respectively. Mason Donaldson also earned a point for Glasgow after finishing sixth in the 300m hurdles with a personal record. Phillips explained that one of his goals this season was to get his kids hurdling to earn available points. He added, "Coach Westby has done a great job with them!"

Phillips also saw his boy runners contribute points with Dalton Sand, Reed Larsen, Lane Thompson and Carl Zabrocki all earning trips to the divisional tournament in the distance events. "I was really happy with the 400m boys: Blake [Lloyd], Devin [Nesbitt] and Reed all set personal bests!" enthused Phillips. "Devin did so out of the slower heat – that was one of the amazing performances of the day!"

Though Phillips is moving on a significant number of his athletes to the divisional tournament, he lamented the loss of some of his athletes. On the boys side, he noted Alex Barlow, Zavier Urbin, and Sam Rodriguez put in strong showings but were unable to place. On the girls side, Phillips expects to see Emma Whitmer, Raelee Dowden, Haylly Turner and Kat Malnaa return strong in upcoming seasons after improving this year.

"Again, overall we are so very proud of all the kids who battle this past weekend," Phillips concluded. "For Divisional, it's gonna be tough for the boys. Conrad and Wolf Point look to be the teams to beat. For the girls, I think we are in the mix with Malta and Conrad for a shot at the title."

The Northern B Divisional tournament will be in Glasgow this Saturday, May 22. Events will begin at 9:30 a.m. At Scottie Field, with the exception of the pole vault. The pole vault will be held at the Valley Event Center and will start at 6 p.m. Friday, May 21, with the girls' competition followed by the boys' competition.
