Scottie Softball Splits Week

Fall to Blue Ponies in Havre - Down Eagles at Home

The Glasgow Scotties split their games last week, dropping a tough game 13-3 against an offensive Havre Blue Ponies team on Tuesday and then bouncing back to win in dramatic fashion at home against the Sidney Eagles by one run, 18-17.

In Havre, Glasgow got on the board first in the top of the first when Alexys Mann crossed home plate on a passed ball. The Scotties at-bat ended though when Tatum Nyquist struck out. Havre answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first.

Meranda Bechel scored on an RBI by Mann, scoring the only run for the Scotties in the second inning. The Blue Ponies again added two runs, taking a 4-2 lead at the end of the inning. The host team held Glasgow scoreless in the third before adding three runs in the bottom of the third.

Havre built up their lead in the fourth inning, sending two runners home while denying Glasgow any trips round the bases. Davyn Myrick crossed the plate in the top of the fifth, scoring the Scotties' third and final run of the game. Havre ended the game in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four times to take a 13-3 lead and end the game on the 10-run rule.

Ashlee Meland took the loss for Glasgow, allowing 13 runs on 14 hits. She threw a 51.9 strike percentage. Myrick led in hits, going two-for-two at the plate.

The Scotties came back on Friday at home, taking an early lead against the Sidney Eagles at Sullivan Park, before allowing the Eagles to wage a comeback attempt in the second half of the game. Glasgow shut down any hopes Sidney had of a win when third baseman Myrick and catcher Stevie Hartwell caught Sidney's Trudi Speldrich in a pickle. Hartwell picked off the Eagle, denying them what would have been a game-tying run.

Sidney scored two runs in the first inning, but Glasgow's offense came out strong and sent four runners all the way around the bases. Meland batted in Mann in on a single fly ball to right field. Meland and Aune completed their round trip on a Myrick single ground ball. Bechel singled on a bunt and batted Myrick in to take the 4-2 lead.

Glasgow's defense allowed only one Eagle run in the top of the second before increasing their lead to 9-3. Aune bunted and made it to first after a Sidney error while also sending Mann and Meland home. Aune scored when Myrick grounded out on the next at-bat. T. Nyquist and Bechel scored when Carly Nelson singled a fly ball to center field.

Each team put up two runs in the third inning as Glasgow maintained a solid lead. Aune scored on Bechel's single to left field. Bechel scored on a passed ball with Brielle Partridge at bat. Sidney began their comeback in the fourth, sending three runners home while keeping Glasgow off the scoreboard.

The Eagles added three more runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 11 before Glasgow rallied with five runs. Meland scored on an Aune single, while Aune rounded the bases on a Myrick fly ball to left field. A Bechel single sent Myrick home and Elizabeth Nyquist scored on Nelson's fly out to right field. Bechel stole third and scored on an error by Sidney's third baseman with Hartwell at bat.

Sidney scored twice more in the top of the sixth, but Glasgow maintained their five-run lead after scoring two runs themselves. Mann scored on an Aune ground out and Myrick came home on a Bechel single fly ball to center field. The Eagles put up four runs in the top of the seventh and would have scored a tying run but for the defensive work of Hartwell and Myrick.

Partridge started the game for the Scotties, pitching for four innings, before being replaced by Meland. Aune stepped into the circle late in the seventh inning. Partridge allowed 11 runs on 13 hits and threw a 65.8 strike percentage. Meland in relief allowed five hits and six runs, while throwing a 44.4 strike percentage. Aune threw three pitches, a 66.7 strike percentage.

Bechel led the Scotties with four hits. Mann and Myrick added three each as the team registered 20 total hits. Aune led Glasgow in runs, scoring four of the Scotties' 18 trips round the bases. Mann, Meland, Myrick and Bechel contributed three each. Myrick and Bechel each had four RBIs while Nelson added three.

The Glasgow Scotties have fielded a young team this season, with sophomores making up half the team's roster. Coaches note the season has been a bit of a rollercoaster as their young players find their roles. Partridge, one of those sophomores has stepped in to become one of the team's go-to pitchers, while also playing second base and outfield positions. She told the Courier, understatedly, about being a pitcher, "I like it," while adding that changing positions all the time has been a challenge.

Myrick, one of four seniors on the team, said the season has been going "pretty good." She told the Courier the highlight of the season so far has been the team's defense. "We stop a lot of things and everyone's playing," she said "Everyone's positive all the time." Myrick is proud of her teammates for never giving up.

Looking forward, Myrick is eager to face the conference teams and see where the Scotties rank.

The Scotties will be in Glendive for a double header Friday, May 7. The first game begins at 3 p.m. The team is tentatively scheduled to attend the Columbus Invitational on Saturday, May 8. Check the Glasgow Scotties Facebook for updates on scheduling.

Glasgow hosts Havre on Monday, May 10 at Sullivan Park for Senior Night, beginning at 5 p.m.
