Scottie Golfers A Go on the Greens

Boys Win Poplar Invitational - Smith Takes Two First Places

After a hiatus from competition thanks to northeast Montana's version of Spring, the Scottie golfers were back on the links for two meets last week. The teams traveled to Wolf Point last Friday for the Poplar Invitational and then went the opposite direction on Saturday to play Marian Hills in Malta.

No matter which direction the Scotties traveled, the weather was the same: awful, cold and windy according to head coach Todd Truscott. Despite the weather the first-year coach said the courses were good and so was his teams' performances.

"Our boys and girls are getting better every day and Coach [Joel] Smith and myself are very impressed by both teams," he enthused. He noted each course presented challenges compared to Sunnyside and the virtual training at Hi-Tech Golf, where the team trains in inclement weather.

Local golfers claim northeast Montana is lucky and proud to claim four very nice courses, in Glasgow, Malta, Wolf Point and Scobey. Though the experienced player is quick to note the differences at each locale. Malta is located in a hillier area while Wolf Point has added some features likely to increase out-of-bounds plays.

Truscott, an avid golfer as well as coach, commented on the short game, "Wolf Point's greens were hard because the speed changed a lot because of dead spots. Malta's greens were challenging because they have sudden breaks and are way bigger than ours."

Despite the new challenges, the Scottie golf team turned in some impressive showings.

Riley Smith led the Glasgow boys team, turning in first place finishes in Wolf Point and Malta. The Scottie sophomore led his team to a victory at the Poplar Invite, shooting a 76. Glasgow had 361 points, followed by Plentywood with 419, Malta with 430 and Scobey with 435 points. In Malta, Smith shot an 85.

Rance Rhodes shot a 92 for second place. Keigan Ingram placed third with a 96 and Eli Feezell shot a 97 to take fourth in the Poplar Invitational. Vinny Chappell scored a 101 to claim fifth place. In Malta, Feezell placed sixth with his 96 score and Ingram rounded out the top ten after shooting a 105.

The Scottie girls took second at the Poplar Invitational, scoring 444, behind Plentywood who had a 397. Scobey turned in a 481 and Malta had 490 points. Bailee Baxter shot a 102 in Wolf Point to take fourth place on the girls bracket. Alesia Hopstad shot a 117 for seventh place while Kylie Lagerquist claimed eighth place with her score of 118. Shanice Lagerquist placed 11th with a 121 and Allie Palm shot a 160.

At Marian Hills, Baxter scored a 105 to finish in fourth place, while S. Lagerquist was in seventh with her 114 and K. Lagerquist was ninth with a 121. The girls team finished with 481 points, as Chinook took the top slot with 445 points.
