Phipps Represents State in the 2021 AAU National Duels

Mayson Phipps represented Montana in the 2021 AAU Jr/Sr National Duals held in Des Moines Iowa April 2 and 3. The Glasgow state champion placed second in the 285-pound class, dropping the title match to AJ Kelly of the Wyoming Gold in a 9-1 Major Decision. Phipps had his best showing this year at the tournament after having attended the past four years. He said "I think being stronger and knowing a little bit more about wrestling, like more moves," contributed to his performance this year. The tournament boasted 92 teams and 28 mats. Phipps said he faced tougher competition there than he did in the regular season as a Scottie. "Everybody there was a state champion," he explained. Phipps was recruited by Guy Melby to be a member of the Montana Grizzlies team. "I liked it, it was fun," Phipps said. "I would just tell everybody that wrestles to go."
