Scottie Wrestlers Determined to Repeat History

Take Second at Divisionals for Second Year - Turn Eyes to Defeating Huntley Project at State Again

Glasgow may not have come out on top of the first ever Eastern B/C Super Divisional Wrestling Tournament this past weekend – that honor went to Huntley Project – but despite the disappointment, the Scotties are taking their second place finish in stride and focusing on the state tournament. Huntley Project won the tournament with 260.0 points, followed closely by Glasgow with 255.5. Circle claimed third with 115.0.

"We've been here before," said Coach Jory Casterline. "Last year they beat us at divisionals. We beat them at state." Prior to divisionals, Casterline expected Huntley Project to prove to be the Scotties' toughest competition. Heading to the state tournament in Shelby this upcoming weekend, he predicts much the same. While he does expect to see competitors from Whitehall and Cut Bank, Casterline said, "It's a two horse race. It's us and Huntley. It's a two horse race."

The Dawg Pound was as packed as it has been this season, with 19 schools in attendance for the Super Divisional and the Scotties enjoyed their home mat advantage. Colten Fast, who won his fourth Divisional Championship, said, "The best part of divisionals was being in front of a home crowd." With his win, he became the seventh Scottie in GHS history to win four divisional championships and the first since Luke Zeiger, who won his from 2009 to 2012.

Casterline said overall he feels good about the weekend, placing 14 wrestlers in the top eight. Six of those grapplers faced off in first place matches. Jake Kuka represented Glasgow in the 113 pound class, taking second place to Huntley Project's Gavin Nedens in sudden victory. Colten Fast won the 152 pound class by decision over Cole Becker of Circle, 8-4. Damian Nesbitt went the distance and then some against Huntley Project's Wylee Lindeen in the 160 pound class, but lost in the ultimate tie breaker 3-3 in the fourth overtime period.

Kyler Hallock pinned William Loveridge of Huntley Project in 4:41 to win the 170 pound class. Dylan Nieskens, who faced his toughest competitor in the championship match, pinned Cade Buchanan of Huntley Project in 1:51 to win the 205 pound class. Nieskens was also named the Jug Beck winner for the most pins in the least amount of time, registering four pins in a total time of 4:26. Mayson Phipps won by fall over Jacob Berger of Poplar in 3:14 to claim the 285 pound class title.

Cooper Larson won a 7-1 decision over Wolf Point's Mason Garfield to take third in the 182 pound class. Alex Ost, in his best career tournament appearance, placed fourth in the 132 pound class. Mason Donaldson, 138, and Devon Nesbitt, 145, also took fourth place finishes in the tourney. Damon Adkins pinned Jaron Lingle of Baker to take fifth place in the 103 pound class. Dawson Boland, 126, and Kohl Kittleson, 285, each claimed seventh place finishes and Austin Hughes took eighth place in the 170 pound class.

The Scotties exude confidence looking at the state tournament. Phipps, a favorite to take the state title, says he will be focused on making this his best week of wrestling yet. Speaking of his teammates, he said, "I think everyone is ready for the state tournament." Hallock expressed pride in how well the team is wrestling and said he believes the team is prepared for state and "we want it."

State tournament action begins Friday, March 5, with the first session, 103 to 145 pound classes, at 10 a.m. At Shelby High School. The second session, 152 to heavyweights, begins at 3 p.m. Semifinals begin on Saturday, March 6, with the third session action at 10 a.m.
