19U Ice Dawgs Place Fifth at State

The 19U Ice Dawgs season may not have ended exactly as they had wanted, but it did end with a shutout win. Glasgow beat the Havre Ice Hawks 1-0 in an early morning game to take fifth place at the state tournament in Bozeman this past weekend. Glasgow lost their first two games of the tourney, before rallying back to beat the Salmon Rapids in overtime.

Glasgow got the jump on Bozeman in their first game when Shanice Lagerquist found the back of the net with assists from Ava Lloyd and goalie Elizabeth Nyquist. The Ice Dawgs carried the 1-0 lead through the rest of the period and all through the second, despite being outshot in both periods. Nyquist turned away 14 shots in the first and 12 in the second as Glasgow put six and two pucks on net during the same time. Bozeman fired 19 pucks at Nyquist in the final 17 minutes, converting on three of those shots to win 3-1.

Glasgow was called for six penalties in the game. Kylie Lagerquist was called for body checking in the first and the third periods. In the second period, Tatum Provencher was called for interference, Shanice Lagerquist for roughing, K. Lagerquist for tripping, and Klaire Krumwiede for holding.

Saturday morning Glasgow hit the ice against the Havre Ice Hawks, coming out slow and allowing Havre to take a 1-0 lead in the first. Havre struck first in the second period but S. Lagerquist netted a goal on an assist from Lloyd to cut the Hawks’ lead in half. Havre added an insurance goal though before the intermission.

The first goal of the third period went to Havre. The Ice Dawgs dug deep and put two more pucks in net but were unable to overcome the Hawks lead. S. Lagerquist, assist Provencher, and Halle Hunter, assists Lloyd and Provencher, were the goal-getters for Glasgow. Havre won the game by a margin of 4-3. Provencher served Glasgow’s only penalty, serving two minutes for interference in the second period.

That evening Glasgow faced Salmon in a come-from-behind, overtime thriller which Glasgow won 6-5 on a short-handed goal from Krumwiede. The game also started with a short-handed goal, scored by S. Lagerquist early in the first. Salmon scored their own goal late in the period to tie the game.

The Rapids took control in the second period, converting three times on 17 shots on goal. Glasgow came out on fire on the fresh sheet of ice and fired 16 shots at Salmon’s netminder. S. Lagerquist and Victoria Pehlke each put a puck in net to bring the Dawgs within one. Salmon added an insurance goal shortly after, but Glasgow cancelled their policy. S. Lagerquist, assist K. Lagerquist, cut the Hawks lead in half and netted the hat trick before K. Lagerquist evened the score on an assist from Provencher, sending the game to overtime and the game-winning goal from Krumwiede.

Both teams put up 33 shots on net in the game. Salmon was called for four penalties while Glasgow served 10 minutes on five calls. Provencher served an interference penalty in the first period. S. Lagerquist, tripping, and K. Lagerquist, roughing, served time in the second period. Lloyd served a roughing penalty in the third while Provencher was sent back to the sin bin on a body checking call.

Sunday morning Glasgow ended their season with a victory, on a goal by Pehlke with assists from K. Lagerquist and S. Lagerquist and a shut-out performance by Nyquist. Nyquist turned away 24 shots while her teammates put 23 on Havre’s net. Glasgow’s two penalties in the game were served in the second period when K. Lagerquist sat for body checking and Provencher took a seat for interference.

Nyquist ended her career as an Ice Dawg with the shut out and an All State first team honor. S. Lagerquist ended her Ice Dawg time with a six-goal weekend, including a hat trick in the overtime win over Salmon. Pehlke was named to the All State second team for defense.
