Scottie Grapplers Grapple Grueling Week

Pretty happy. That's where coach Jory Casterline is with his wrestling squad a few weeks into the season while acknowledging the team has room for improvement. The Scottie team is adjusting to season changes made necessary by the coronavirus pandemic, including more events with fewer participants. This past week, Glasgow had three separate events: a triangular in Miles City on Thursday, a triangular in Malta on Friday and a home mixer on Saturday.

"We dropped duals to two Class A schools," said Casterline but added they had good matches. He said the boys are getting to the right weights and conditioning is getting their legs under them. "I'm happy with where we're at, but as I said, we've got more work to do."

Glasgow split their matches in Miles City, losing to Custer County 38 to 29 after giving up two matches to forfeits, and beating Colstrip 43 to 15. In Malta, the Scotties dropped a close dual to Class A Lewistown by two points, 35 to 33, again giving up two matches via forfeit. They returned to the mat and beat Malta by a score of 48 to 9. At home on Saturday, Glasgow hosted Circle, Chinook and Harlem, putting 14 in the win column while dropping 10 matches.

Colten Fast, Damien Nesbitt, Dylan Nieskens and Mayson Phipps turned in perfect records last week. Fast gave the home crowd a thrilling show on Saturday when he faced off against Cole Becker of Circle in the 152-pound class. Becker is the defending 145-pound state champ and Fast the 132-pound state champ. Both grapplers bumped up to their current classthis year. The two went the distance, with Fast walking away with the 2-1 Decision.

Nieskens had four wins by pin and one win by forfeit against Colstrp. The 205-pound class wrestler was happy to get some matches in after a number of forfeits to start the season, and added, "I am looking forward to wrestling some more tough opponents."

Cooper Larson, Glasgow's 205-pound state champ last season, suffered an injury during Friday's meet, but is happy with his season thus far and is adjusting to his new weight class. The 182-pound wrestler is expected to be out for one to two weeks but has plans to return to the mat strong. He said, "My goal for the season is to finish strong and end my high school career without any regrets.

This week, the Scotties traveled to Sidney for a triangular against Sidney and Baker on Tuesday. The team travels to Havre Friday, Jan. 22, for a triangular against Corvallis and Ronan beginning at 4 p.m. On Saturday, Jan. 23, the grapplers will be at Big Timber to take on Livingston and Laurel beginning at 10 a.m. .
