Mavericks Defeat Scotties in Glasgow

From the moment the North Country Mavericks won the tip off against the Glasgow Scotties they were in control of the game. The visitors went on to win decisively 49-33 led by Jaycee Erickson's 19 points and Kaitlyn McColly's 15. Riley Noser and Tyann Graham led the Scotties with 14 and 12, respectively.

Glasgow's troubles in the game started early when Abrianna Nielsen took a seat on the bench with two fouls just 33 seconds into the game. McColly scored first for North Country and the team would maintain the lead for the remainder of the game. Erickson put up 10 of the Mavericks' 24 first quarter points. McColly added seven, Paige Wasson four and Kia Wasson three. The Scotties scored 11 points, led by Noser's four, Graham's three, and Daley Aune's Alexys Mann's field goals.

Glasgow scored seven points in the second quarter while holding North Country to four, which came on field goals from K. Wasson and Erickson. Noser put up on of the Scotties' points with strong rebounding and three field goals, plus one free throw.

Glasgow again outscored North Country in the third quarter, 10-9, after a slow start by both teams marked by turnovers. Erickson drained a three to start the quarter's scoring, but was answered by a three from Glasgow's Graham. Nielsen added a baseline three pointer for Glasgow before Graham put in another to bring Glasgow within four, 31-27. Mann drew roars from the crowd with an aggressive blocked shot late in the third quarter. Despite their play, the Scotties were down at the end of the quarter, 37-28.

In the fourth quarter, North Country continued with their full court press, pressuring the Scotties and forcing turnovers as they had throughout the game. "We were able to control the tempo of the game pretty much all the way through," said Mavericks coach Amber Erickson. "I felt like that tempo and our pressure defense got them flustered and really paid off in the first and fourth quarters for us."

The aggressive defense by the Mavericks also fueled their offense, as the visitors put up 12 points to the home team's 5, to win the game 49-33. Despite the Mavs owning the floor, the Scotties proved their heart, continuing to fight for the final eight minutes of play.

LaBrie, McColly and Erickson each put up two field goals for four points a piece in the fourth. Glasgow struggled to get the ball in the net until the final minute. Noser put in two free throws and Graham nailed her fourth three pointer of the game.

In addition to Erickson's 19 and McColly's 15, P. Wasson had six points, K. Wasson five, and LaBrie four for the Mavericks. Erickson and McColly also led the team in fouls with two each, while LaBrie, K. Wasson and Kelsee Cummings were called for one each.

Nielsen added three points, Aune two and Mann two to Noser's 14 and Graham's 12 for the Scotties. Nielsen and Blaire Westby had two fouls each, while Graham, Aune, Mann and Noser were each called for one.

On Saturday the team traveled to Scobey and dropped a hard fought battle against the Spartans, who waged a comeback to win. The Scotties put up seven points in the first, with buckets coming from Nielsen, 3; Westby, 2 and Noser, 2. Going into the second quarter, Glasgow led 7-5. They again outscored their hosts by two, putting up 9 points to Scobey's 7. Graham and Noser put up four points each, including two free throws from each. Nielse added three and Aune two.

Glasgow led by one at the end of the third after Scobey's Gracee Lekvold led the Spartans, putting in all of her team's 10 points. On the Scotties' side of the scoreboard Nielsen put in up a three pointer and Graham added a field goal and two free throws. Lekvold continued her scoring streak in the fourth, putting in seven of the Spartans' nine points while the home team held Glasgow to a single field goal from Noser. The Spartans claimed the 33-29 victory.

Glasgow hosts Harlem on Thursday, Jan. 14, with JV action beginning at 3:30 p.m. The Scotties will travel to Poplar on Saturday, Jan. 16 with JV squad action starting at 1 p.m.
