The Scotties did not get the start they wanted to their 2021 basketball season. The home squad, decked out in their red road uniforms for Color Rush night, fell to the visiting Malta Mustangs, 57-40. Rex Williamson set the pace for the Mustangs, draining a three pointer early in the first quarter. Malta would nail 10 three-pointers in the game, netting over half their points from outside the perimeter.
Malta took an early 8-0 lead on two treys and a bucket before Glasgow called a timeout to attempt to regroup. Soon after the brief break, Bergen Miller put the Scotties on the scoreboard with a three point shot. Keigan Skolrud, Hunter Collinsworth and Dalton Sand each added two points to the home team's score in the first quarter but they were unable to keep up with the Mustangs scoring machine, which included a trey from Malta's 6'6" post Connor Tuss.
The Scotties started the second quarter down, 19-10. The boys in red battled back, taking their game inside to 6'3" Skolrud, who led his squad with seven points in the quarter. Miller and Collinsworth contributed to Glasgow's 10 points, while the team held Malta to nine points in the second eight minutes of play. The Scotties faced a 28-20 deficit going into halftime.
Malta returned to the hardwood with renewed purpose in the third, holding Glasgow to 10 points while racking up 22 points on their side of the scoreboard. The Mustangs easily made their way around the Scotties on the floor, outmaneuvering and outrebounding the home team. Seeing the game slipping away the Scotties made a move to extend their defense beyond the half court, pressing out as Malta moved the ball up court. Malta took advantage of a spread out defense, putting up four more three-pointers to extend their lead to 50-30 going into the final quarter.
Glasgow held the visitors to seven points in the fourth, but were unable to overcome the deep deficit. Points from Dalton Sand, Vinny Chappell, Skolrud and Collinsworth took the Scotties to 40 points, but the final score held at 57-40 as the Mustangs ran down the clock to end the game.
Skolrud led the Scotties with 13 points and four fouls. He went 1-for-4 from the free throw line and was 6-for-9 from the field. Miller, 3-for-7 from the field, and Collinsworth, 4-for-9, added nine points each. Miller incurred one foul and Collinsworth had three. Sand added four points and three fouls, Trevor Klind had three points, and Vinny Chappell had two points and one foul. Beau Malnaa had one foul.
