When Shoes Lasted Forever

Thank you to my friend for seeing that I had an article for this issue of the Courier.

Do you remember back in the day when a pair of shoes lasted forever. Shoes were passed down from one kid to the next youngster. If you happened to be the eldest child you were the lucky one as you received more new items than your siblings. Of course shoes did often show signs of wear and that is when the local shoe cobbler came in. A few of this handy shoe repair man serving the Glasgow area come to mind. I realize I will miss a few of those great guys and will probably spell names incorrectly, but that was back in the days, and kids just remembered the person and probably the location. Names that come to mind: Danny Wambeci, Johnny Silk, Scotty Ferguson, Glenn Miller, Johnny Beardsley, Bennie Hinrich, and Forrest Smith. Yes there were a few cobblers in that I could name in more recent years, some I knew and others not, but they served the need mostly for boot repair as leather shoes appeared less and less on the market. Yes, things change. From the days of hopefully owning one pair of shoes/boots to the present day of having many different ones in your closet.
