HS Ice Dawgs Drop Non-conference Game to Richland

In an unusual weeknight game, the High School Ice Dawgs took on the Richland Rangers in a late addition to the schedule at the Valley Event Center. The Dawgs dropped the non-conference game in which head coach Pat Braaten took on an observer role. "I'm sitting up above, watching," he said. "It gives me a different perspective on the players."

The game gave the Dawgs the chance to face the Rangers, who had been scheduled to host the opening tournament of the year. It was also possibly the only chance the home team will have this season to play by North Dakota rules as that state has canceled their winter season due to the coronavirus pandemic. The match up was also a chance for the home team to play different lines on the man advantage and during kills, while giving both goalies time between the pipes.

Glasgow put up only one goal in the game, losing by a score of 5 to 1. The teams closed out the first dead even, with no goals on the scoreboard. Captain Ian Peterson racked up 14 minutes in penalties in the opening period on a two-minute kneeing penalty and a 10-and-2 misconduct call.

On freshly zammed ice in the second, the Rangers found the back of the net minutes in to play. An extended break in play occurred at 1317 when hi-tech repairs had to be made to the glass behind Richland's goalie. Richland added their insurance goal with 9:22 on the clock. Michael Hoyer, with help from Randall Lasar and Zevin Kummerfeldt, scored the lone Dawgs' goal of the game with 6:28 remaining before the second intermission. Richland added their third goal a couple minutes later to take a 3-1 lead. Richland was called for two infractions in the second and Glasgow turned in a clean 17 minutes of play.

Sidney put up two more goals in the third, including a power play goal scored 12 seconds into Sam Knierim's interference call. Gage Siefert and Michael Uphues were each called for roughing in the third period of the Dawgs' loss. Glasgow had 14 total shots on goal, while Brayden Hansen saw 13 in the first period. Aiden Wilkowski was credited with facing 12 shots after relieving Hansen midway through the second period.

The Ice Dawgs had been scheduled to play in Flathead Dec. 19 and 20, but the games were postponed. No new dates for the games have yet been set. The Dawgs will next take to the ice in the new year with home games at at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 2 and 10 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 3, against Helena.
