Back in Black: HS Hockey Opens Season in Glasgow

Sporting uniforms they debuted late last season, the Glasgow High School Ice Dawgs opened their hockey season this past weekend at the Valley Event Center, hosting the Flathead Fusion and Copper City Kings for four games. Facing off against teams with more games under their belts, the Dawgs had a challenging weekend, dropping four games to the visitors. Though they lost their games, the home team brought plenty of excitement to the ice, giving the fans and officials plenty to watch.

Friday night's game had the boys in black hitting the ice against the Flathead Fusion. From the first puck drop, the visitors dominated puck control for the first two periods and went on to win by a score of 11 to 3. Flathead found the back of the net first, scoring twice before Glasgow lit the lamp. Colter Barnett netted the Dawgs' first goal, with assists from Ian Peterson and Michael Uphues. Flathead would get past Glasgow goalie Brayden Hansen twice more before Tatum Hansen scored for Glasgow, to close the first at 4-2 for the Fusion.

Flathead continued to showcase their passing and puck handling in the second, demonstrating experience gained in previous games, while Glasgow struggled to keep up with them. The visitors added six goals in the period before Barnett added the Dawgs' third of the game with 33 seconds before intermission. Some frustration spilled out for the home team as the Fusion ran up the score when Kaden Kummerfeldt was ejected for dropping the gloves.

Glasgow reversed the momentum in the third, putting up 22 shots on Fusion goalie Charlie Hinchey while allowing only five attempts on Brayden Hansen in their own end. However, it was the Fusion who put the biscuit past Brayden Hansen once early in the final period. Brayden Hansen saw 42 total attempts on his net, while his Dawgs threw 34 biscuits at Hinchey. Glasgow had seven infractions while Flathead sat players for only two penalties.

Saturday morning, the Fusion again took an early lead and went on to win, 14-2. Flathead took advantage of Glasgow penalties with two of their first three goals coming on the man-advantage. Bailey Hansen netted a power play goal for the Dawgs with 20 ticks left on the clock, assisted by Trevor Dulaney and T. Hansen. The Fusion again owned the second period, putting in seven pucks to Glasgow's one, which came from Michael Uphues early in the period.

Flathead added four goals in the third period while continuing to dominate puck control, firing puck after puck at Brayden Hansen. The Fusion outshot the Dawgs 20-3 in the final, and 61-14 in the game. Flathead held their penalty minutes to six on three calls as Glasgow visited the sin bin eight times.

That night Glasgow was back on the ice, this time facing a different team and a far different style of play. In an action-packed game that would go to sudden death overtime, the Ice Dawgs looked to commit regicide against the Copper City Kings. That plan died on a breakaway shot that went past Dawgs goalie Aidin Wilkowski with 1:44 left of the five minute overtime, for a final score of 5-4.

The Ice Dawgs hit the ice with renewed purpose Saturday night and scored their first two goals within 30 seconds of puck drop. Sixteen seconds in Uphues struck first, assisted by Michael Hoyer. Thirteen seconds after that Hoyer would assist Gage Siefert on goal number two. The Kings would strike on a power play midway through the first to close the period with the Dawgs up 2-1.

Both teams took trips to the box in the first as they renewed their rivalry this season. Glasgow was called for five infractions and Copper City sat for three calls. The Dawgs fired 13 pucks at Kings goalie Eddie Kazmierczak while Wilkowski saw nine attempts on his home.

Despite 14 shots on goal in the second period, Glasgow was shut out. Copper City tied the game, scoring once on 15 attempts. The penalty box continued to see action in the second period as the Dawgs sat five times and the Kings were called for another three infractions.

The third period saw more penalties and more goals for both teams. Copper City took the lead early in the final period and added an insurance goal minutes later. But Glasgow was far from done. Siefert netted a power play goal midway through the third on a Kings' tripping penalty. With only 1:39 left, T. Hansen scored the tie goal. After a confab on new rules this season, five minutes were added to the clock for sudden death overtime.

In three-on-three action, the teams battled up and down the ice, with a two-minute interlude when a Kings' penalty gave Glasgow a man advantage, though they were unable to take advantage of the four-on-three. Noah Williamson broke away from Glasgow on a takeaway and made his way down the ice to fire the game-winning shot against Wilkowski with 1:44 remaining.

Glasgow had 36 total attempts on net in the game while Copper City fired 52 shots at Wilkowski. The Dawgs served time for 14 penalties and the Kings were called for 12 infractions.

Sunday morning, the Kings and Dawgs faced off again and the outcome was another loss for the home team, 5-1. Copper City netted the first goal of the game minutes in. Hoyer scored for Glasgow with 2:57 remaining in the first, assisted by T. Hansen. The 1-1 score held for the first 17 minutes with Glasgow putting up nine total shots and Copper City shooting 15 times.

Penalties would cost the Dawgs over the game, as the chirping intensified. The Kings put up two power plays goals in the second period with Peterson in the box for elbowing on the first and Uphues serving time for tripping on the second one. With 1:01 to go before intermission, the Valley Event Center erupted as Siefert exchanged blows with Hunter Holms as frustrations boiled over. Both players were ejected from the game after officials conferred on the call.

Copper City added an additional two power play goals in the third period for a final score of 5-1 when Glasgow incurred five infractions. Copper City was called for three penalties in the third. Glasgow put up 20 shots in the game and Brayden Hansen faced 46 total pucks between the posts.

The High School Ice Dawgs will be on the road this upcoming weekend, traveling to Flathead for a rematch. The Dawgs will play the Fusion Saturday, Dec. 19, at 8 p.m. and again on Sunday, Dec. 20 at 8 a.m.
