Scottie Boys and Girls Claim First in Poplar

Both teams of Glasgow Scottie Harriers picked up the number one spot at the Poplar Invitational on Sept. 5. The wins were made possible by the fact that the top five runners for the boys all placed in the top 16 with four of the five in the top nine. For the girls the top five all placed in the top 20 with the top three among the first 10 runners to finish.

That really helped the boys said junior Bergen Miller. "Having all our guys so close together and so close to the front puts a huge gap between us and everyone else," explained Miller. In the end, the Scotties fielded a team of eight boys and all of them finished in the top 30 and seven in the top 20 out of nine schools and more than 50 runners.

The day was not without surprises for Miller, who came in expecting to run the same course as years prior, but was caught off guard by a large hill for the first three-quarters of a mile. Still that did not deter the Scotties from racing the course well.

"Our team was kinda killing it," exclaimed the junior.

The Scotties will head to Havre next to compete in a large meet with a variety of classes to run against. Miller said the challenge should really show where the Scotties stand in the state since so far this season they have competed mostly against far east schools in Sidney and Poplar, so he anticipates Havre having a wider draw and more competition.

"The competition [in Havre] will be new, it should give some better perspective," said Miller.

For freshman Emily See, Poplar was a good day. The young runner came out running to take the sixth spot overall and earn her varsity letter for the year to boot with a time of 23:37. See was the number two runner for the girls behind first-place overall Iris McKean who ran a blistering 19:50.40 in Poplar.

See described the day as "pretty good" and cited the double first place finishes for the teams. "We all dropped our times," she said, "so that's definitely good." With lettering out of the way the freshman is hoping to shave her time throughout the season aiming to ultimately get down to the 22-minute mark.

The Scotties will race again in Havre on Sept. 11.
